Fern Dewey Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Nov. 15 to Nov. 16, 2008.
DEWEY, Fern Reichman, 89, of Powhatan, formerly of Bon Air, died November 13, 2008. Born in 1918 in Topeka, Kan., she was the survivor of 10 children. Beautiful, intelligent and ambitious, she followed two older sisters to the east coast, settling in pre-WWII Washington. During a visit to Philadelphia in 1942 at the USO, she met and fell in love with Air Force Sgt. Ray Dewey. They married in 1943. Sons, Ray Jr. and Jeff followed, then the three sisters and their families settled in New Jersey. She was preceded in death by Ray after 60 years of marriage. A transfer to Richmond resulted in a professional career featuring founding membership in the National Secretary Association and the Certified Professional Secretary designation. She retired as the administrative assistant to the President of Abbott, Proctor and Paine. Survivors include sons, Ray Jr. and his wife, Pat, of Powhatan and Jeff and his wife, Pat of Mechanicsville; grand-daughter, Allison of Mechanicsville; grandson, Mark and his wife, Jill, and their daughter, Virginia, of Powhatan; as well as countless nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Special Olympics Virginia Area 6.

I remember Aunt Fern as being a part of my young life. She was a part of all our family events and every day life when they moved across the street from us. She was my beautiful sophisticated aunt.

Mrs. Dewey was a patient in our dental office since 1999. She was such a sweet lady and always talked of her precious grandchildren. She often brought pictures of them to show to all the staff. We will truly miss her smiling face and we extend our thoughts and prayers to all her family and friends.

Mary, Fern and Georgie. The three sisters from Kansas that raised their families together in New Jersey. I will never forget my growing up years and the part Aunt Fern played in our family life. My Mom was Mary and they were like three peas in a pod. God bless you Aunt Fern in a well deserved rest with our Savior.

Ray and Pat I didn't know your mom, but I do know that you two have wonderful memories and will miss her. I will thinking of you two as your grieve and also to celebrate the joy to know that she was ready and is in a better place. Kiss virginia for me.

Aunt Fern was an extraordinary lady. I really admired her. I loved her and considered her like a second Mom. I will truly miss her.

Fern was a wonderful lady, always a lady. We shared many happy days together; from a backyard barbeque with corn on the cob, to the celebration of Christmas at Jill & Mark's home, and of course the birth of our Virginia Louise. We will miss Fern, but we are grateful to have known her.
