Mattie Dixon Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Nov. 30, 2008.
DIXON, Mattie Mae Pickett "Mama D", of Beaverdam, formerly of Richmond, Va., passed away peacefully on November 29, 2008 in her home on her 97th birthday, with daughters by her side. She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew B. Dixon. She leaves to cherish her memory two children, M. Lois (Margo) Cooper and her husband, Kelly, of Quinton and Frances Tipton and her husband, Robert (Red), of Beaverdam; three grandchildren, Maggie, Andrea, and Nicholas Tipton. She will be missed by Max, the family dog and her loving companion, who spent countless evenings keeping her feet warm. Mattie Mae was born in Durham, North Carolina. She came to Richmond to attend Nursing School at Retreat for the Sick, where she graduated in 1934 as a registered nurse. She retired from The Richmond Eye Hospital in 1975. Mattie Mae was an inspiration. Her family was blessed to closely share her final years. She shared values with us that only one of her generation would know. In her later years, she shared laughter and delight in some of the more simple aspects of life with everyone she met. The family is grateful to Odyssey, especially Connie, for always being there and guiding us through this journey. Also, we would like to extend a special thanks to Glenny for the love and care she provided. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Atlee Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, Rt. 301 & Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. at Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Odyssey Health Care, 8000 Franklin Farms Drive, Suite 100, Richmond, Va. 23229.

Margo,
Sorry to hear about your Mother.
I passed the word to other who might not know it. Sorry I will not beable to come tomorrow.

When you need someone, take courage...
The Lord is with you everywhere
And understands, because
He knows the sorrow that you bear.

Your schoolmate, Ellen Louise

Dear Fran and Margo,

Mattie Mae was so dear to me. I think of her often. I am so glad I got to know her when she unselfishly came to Durham to take care of Archie, my grandfather, her brother. I appreciated her way of always speaking her mind. When I took over the caregiver role, she, (and Grace ) taught me what to do -she was a godsend to me.
Love to you all- Debbie Pickett Mills

Perfectly written for such a lovely woman! She was like a grandmother to my son when we lived next door to her. You are right, only her generation had such values! Cherish your memories as no one can take those away!
