Richard Berger Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Dec. 4 to Dec. 5, 2008.
BERGER, Richard Malcolm, died at his home on Sunday, November 30, 2008 after a brief illness. He was born at Lynch's Station, Va., August 6, 1930. His parents were Alonzo Smith Berger and Virginia Susan Short Berger Oliver; his brothers, Arthur William Berger and Vincent Addison Berger preceded him in death. He graduated from Gretna High School and served in the United States Navy twice, the second time during the Korean War. After the war, he studied chemistry at Lynchburg College and continued his education at the night school of Richmond Professional Institute (now part of Virginia Commonwealth University). Mr. Berger worked 47 happy, rewarding years at U.S. Filter Company/American Filtrona Corp. He began there as Quality Control Chemist. Later he became Manager of Research and Development and a Vice-President. He was creative and diligent. His ideas yielded numerous U.S. Patents. His favorite leisure activity was golf, often at Bermuda Golf Club in Chesterfield County, where he enjoyed many friendships. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Bozarth Berger; and their daughter, Susan Ann Berger Ryan. His unpretentious dignity, charm and wit will be sorely missed by them and by all his family and friends. God bless them. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, December 6, at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. Burial in Greenwood Memorial Gardens will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 12400, Richmond, Va. 23241.

May God bless you Nancy and Susan in your time of sorrow. I wanted to attend the Memorial Service, but due to the 6-hour drive and sickness in my immediate family, I wasn't able to attend. Mr. Berger was such a wonderful man to work for. I kept hoping to get back to Richmond to visit with him and my co-workers. It was truly a joy to work for such an intelligent, caring person. I really hated to leave my job when my husband was transferred to NC. Please know that you'll be in my prayers, especially during this holiday season.

What a blessing to have known "Mr. Berger" for the past 27 years! When we moved into our cul-de-sac, he and his family welcomed our family with opened arms.

I could almost always set my clock by the time Dick left each day for work or when I saw him doing his "warm-up windmills" on the golf path behind our houses before his morning run. I'm sure he's leading the pack in heaven on a quick jog to the first tee!

God bless this gentle giant of a man who always had a warm smile and a twinkle in his eye. We shall miss him.

Mr. Berger was the father of my friend Susan. Tall, quiet, gentle, down-to-earth, honorable, and unassuming, Mr. Berger was truly the salt of the earth. I always had great respect for him.
