CLAY, Janie J., 92, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on January 27, 2009. Born in Arvonia, Va., Janie was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Edward L. Clay Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory, three sons, Edward L. Clay Jr. (CiJay), J. Daniel Clay (Janet) and John W. Clay (Diane); two daughters, Dorothy Lacy (Richard) and Elaine Lane (Bill); nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She worked as an RN and as a public health nurse for Henrico and Goochland Counties before retiring in 1978. An avid gardener, loving wife, mother and grand-mother, she was devoted to her family and her church, Parham Road Baptist, where she was a charter member. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 29, at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St. A service will be conducted 11 a.m. on Friday, January 30, at Parham Road Baptist Church. Interment to follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Parham Road Baptist Church, 2101 N. Parham Rd., Richmond, Va. 23229, or Bon Secours Hospice Foundation, 5875 Bremo Rd., Suite 710, Richmond, Va. 23226. The family wishes to thank all her special caregivers.

Dear Clay family,

I worked at Spring Arbor of Richmond when your mother was there briefly. I always loved her spirit and thought it was wonderful that you honored her by letting her go home for the end of her life. She had the most beautiful smile and twinkle in her eyes all the time. I'm glad I had a chance to get to know her and you.

James and I are so sorry to hear of your loss. Your Mother was a wonderful person and devoted Christian and we know she will be missed by her family, friends and neighbors.
