Virginia Newell Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Feb. 28, 2009.
NEWELL, Virginia Lee Wells, a native of Petersburg, who lived in the Prince George and Richmond areas until a few years ago when she moved with her daughter and son-in-law to Gloucester County, died on February 26, 2009. Virginia was a member of Gloucester Point Baptist Church and the Minnie Rowe Sunday school class. She enjoyed singing and well into her 80's she sang for "the old people" at the nursing home. Virginia made friends easily and was the type of friend you were proud to have. Her honesty, strength and depth of character will forever remain in our hearts and the hearts of her friends. Her parents, Thomas J. Wells, Sr. and Lola Cameron Wells; husband, Julius Fulton Newell; sister, Frances Joyner and brother T. J. Wells, Jr. also preceded her in death. She is survived by her loving daughter, Rose Gill and husband, Benny; niece, Dianthia Joyner; nephew, Charles Joyner and wife, Betty. Graveside funeral services, officiated by Reverend Ray Goude Jr., will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Blandford Cemetery, 319 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, Va. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 until 4 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point, Va. In Virginia's memory, contributions may be given to the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, Post Office Box 385, Gloucester, Va. 23061.

Ginnie is so special to me. I met Ginnie in 1964 when I first worked with her at Pioneer Federal. I was a 19 year homesick girl from New Orleans that had moved to Hopewell, Va. Ginnie became my adoptive Mama. She loved me unconditionally and accepted me for just who I was at that time. I will miss my yearly Christmas Cards from her but I will always remember the friendship and love that we shared. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Rose (Blue) and Ben.
