Doris Blackwell Obituary

BLACKWELL, Doris Fleming, widow of the late John Davenport Blackwell; daughter of Doris Jones Fleming and Carl Fleming; born December 20, 1920; passed away peacefully on August 28, 2009, in Richmond, Virginia. Preceding her in death were her brothers, Carl and John Fleming, both World War II pilots; and her daughter, Mary Ball Blackwell. Remembered for helping others, she was a leading volunteer for the Soup Kitchen program at Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. A former president of the Tuckahoe Garden Club, she also served on the board of Elk Hill. She was an avid participant and founding member of the Wednesday Lunch. Surviving her are children, Doris Blackwell Stimpson, of Boyce, Virginia, John Davenport Blackwell Jr. and Carl Fleming Blackwell, both of Richmond, Virginia, and Ellen Blackwell Pons, of Bel Air, Maryland. In addition, she leaves behind nine beloved grandchildren. Services will be held at 12 noon, Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at Grace & Holy Trinity Church with burial following at Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richmond Public Library, 101 E. Franklin St., Richmond, Va., 23219, or Grace and Holy Trinity Church, 8 N. Laurel St., Richmond, Va., 23220.
