Charles Hern Gilleland Jr.

GILLELAND, Charles Hern Jr., 65, of Oak Island, died September 10, 2009 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. Mr. Gilleland was born in Seattle, Wash. on December 5, 1943. The son of the late Charles Hern Gilleland Sr. and Joye Erline Elliott Gilleland, he was a member of Southport Baptist Church where he sang in the choir. Mr. Gilleland was a volunteer at the church, delivering meals to homebound members. He enjoyed playing the piano and singing. His love of music showed as he sang in a quartet while living in Virginia. Mr. Gilleland was a member of Cape Fear Chordsmen as well. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Marie Gilleland. Survivors include one son, John Mark Gilleland of Richmond, Va.; one daughter, April Marie Gilleland of Richmond, Va.; one brother, Charles Butler Gilleland of Pateros, Wash.; two sisters, Essie Mae Jernigan of Oak Island, N.C. and Dorothy Rowan of Vancouver, Wash.; two nieces, Michele Lynn Bullard of Sanford, N.C. and Joye Erline Hedden of Richmond, Va.
