Joseph SMITH Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Sep. 23, 2009.
SMITH, Joseph Warren, 44, died September 20, 2009 in a tragic car accident. "Joey" was born November 16, 1964 in Hopewell, Va., to Thomas Richard Smith Sr. and Alta Ruth Ange Smith at John Randolph Hospital. He was extremely proud to be a member of Millwright Union Local 1402, what he called, "God's chosen few." He also was a member of the Church of Christ and enjoyed a good hard day's work. His heart was warm and kind and he has left us far too soon. Joey loved his Mom and Dad, his wife, his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed making friends and sharing life stories. He always told a good story and was a gentle man with a natural gift for making us laugh. He will be missed greatly by his family and everyone who knew him. Joey is survived by his wife, Lisa Reny Smith; sons, Denis Smith and James Smith; daughters, Heather Ward and Melissa Smith Martin; son-in-law, Brandon Martin; sister, Wanda Smith Witherspoon; brothers, Thomas R. Smith Jr., Larry Smith and Kyle Smith; and five grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, September 24, 2009 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 214 N. 6th Avenue, Hopewell, Va. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, September 25, 2009 at Cameron Avenue Church of Christ, Colonial Heights, Va., with Mark Dailey officiating. Interment will be private.

Lisa and Family,
I just heard the news and I can't put into words how bad I truly feel for you and your family. I'm so thankful to have had the good times and laughs and the memories of Joe. It's been years since I've been in contact to catch up on new things and laugh about some of the old stunts. But please know Joe made a huge impact on the people that are fortunate enough to be able to say he was a friend at anytime during our lives.

A new soul a gift to us this day
A simple request with us do stay.
The time we get is much too brief,
Our pleas are headed without relief.

Our hearts now fill with joy and tears
Knowing we had too few years. Taken from us by the wings of love to join the Angels in the heaven's above.

Souls long past are there to meet
This brand New Angel with arms do greet. From your place aloft
now with Angels blessed.

Forever in an external peaceful rest.
The soul we lost is high above An Angel now watching over us with love.

My condolences go to Joey's children, and my love goes to his daughter, Heather. Words can not express the grief that we feel when we lose a parent. You need to hold the good memories close to your heart and know that your dad will never leave you. He is your angel now.

We feel the loss of a great friend. Family really. We had been so close for so long. Our families spent so much time together. Wives best friends and husbands best friends. That does not happen often and we feel lucky to have the fun times we had with Joey and his family! We always felt comfortable with his family. All the holidays, birthdays, everything...wonderful memories. We will miss Joey very much. We hope the family knows even though we are not there our hearts are and it provides some comfort that we share in your loss. We loved him very much. Love outlasts life!
