Norman ROLFE Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Sep. 30, 2009.
ROLFE, Norman, 85, passed away on September 28, 2009. He was born May 29, 1924 in New York City and lived there until he entered college at the University of Richmond. In his freshman year, Norman met his future wife, Bertha Cohen, a high school senior. After serving in World War II, he returned to Richmond and married Bertha, to whom he was devoted for more than 63 years. Norman co-founded Southern Distributors, Inc., a wholesale sundry, toy and school supply business, and served as president of the firm for many years. In retirement, he volunteered at the Massey Cancer Center Library at Stony Point, serving patients with good cheer and wisdom, and often side-by-side with Bertha. Norman battled non-Hodgkins lymphoma for more than 15 years. Norman's greatest joy was being with his children, grandchildren and extended family and lifelong friends. In addition to Bertha, he is survived by his son, Robert M. Rolfe; daughter, Robin R. Partin; son-in-law, Richard N. Partin; former daughter-in-law, Catherine S. Rolfe; grandchildren, P. Alexander Rolfe and his wife, Aparna, Asher B. Rolfe and his wife, Douglas, Joel A. Rolfe, Zachary A. Rolfe, Nathan M. Partin and Seth J. Partin; great-granddaughter, Molly Rolfe; his sister and brother-in-law, Adele and Sheldon Safran; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lillian and Seymour Dworsky; numerous nephews and nieces. He was a member of Congregation Beth Ahabah. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Massey Cancer Center, Box 980214, Richmond, Va. 23298-0214.

Dear Bertha,
We of From the Heart feel such compassion for you. We will miss Norman's cheerful smile and gracious attitude. He was always so willing to help us deliver our donations not only to Stony Point but would pack his station wagon to the top with our bags for downtown MCV. What a sweet, kind man he was and we will all miss him terribly.
Our best to you and your family and please know we all have you in our prayers.
Sincerely,

Dear Bertha,

Norman was a wonderful neighbor, as you are. Often helpful to me, he always had a smile and a cheerful hello. He served on our Board of Directors for many, many years, making a big contribution to our entire community. I am sorry for your loss and will miss seeing his smiling face.

Bertha,

I think the world is a little sadder place today with Norman's passing! I consider myself quite fortunate not only to have known him, but also having the great fortune and opportunity of having worked for and with him for 18 years. He was always quite congenial and consistent in his mannerisms and expectations. Even though he was my employer, our relationship was such that I considered him a friend more than a boss. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in your time of sorrow!

Dear Bertha,

I can't begin to tell you how sad I am. You and Norman have been a permit fixture at MCV as long as I have been here. I am so very blessed to have known both of you for 32 years. You know I use to call Norman "The Worlds Best Husband" on his name tag at reunion I think he got a kick out of that. I sincerely do believe in my heart there are no better people in this world than you and Norman.
Your family is in my thoughts and prayers as always. If you ever need anything please do not hesitate to call.
Lots of Love, Ann Nelms
