I just discovered this web page and learned of Sonny's passing. Even though over a year has passed, I wish to send my condolences to the family. I was 9 years old when I first became a race fan at Beltsville Speedway, and I can still remember clearly sitting at the top of the grandstands watching pre-race practice and wondering which of the "Richmond boys" were gonna show up for the big races. Whenever I saw that powder blue Zervakis 01 roll through the parking lot I knew my local favorites just lost another spot in the final standings. My father and I always walked the pits and met any of the drivers that would talk with us, and after a while, Sonny used to recognize me and say a warm "hello there" even though he only ran Beltsville a few times a year. Most of the other drivers were way too busy for a little kid like me.

About a year ago, I made diecast models of the 01 and Flying 11 Chevelles. At the time I made these, I knew Ray had died but not Sonny. Now I'm sad to find a year later that Sonny has passed. Sonny and Ray raced at Beltsville Speedway in Maryland. Always exciting and never boring...may Sonny and Ray RIP

I just wanted to say how much my family enjoyed watching Sonny race. We couldn't wait for Friday nights at SSS. My dad ran the wreckers (Broad Rock Towing) at Southside for years and he use to greet Sonny at the flag stand after he won a race and hand him an ice cold can of Coke. I saw Sonny not long ago and he remembered my Dad doing that. We truly loved Sonny and sorry to hear that he is gone. I am sure my Dad met him at the finish line one last time with an ice cold Coca Cola.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of a man who I revered and have such great memories of watching his skills behind the wheel of Junies #90, Emanuels #01, and a race or two in George Williams #22. I can still see Sonny in that #22, and taking it all the way up front, something it had never been close to before....The TRUE mark of a "Driver". All the Manassas, Beltsville, Southside, Langley Field, and Martinsville memories I hope will stay with me forever. Hutchins family? You are so very fortunate. Most of "us" only got to see, hear, and love Sonny on weekends. You had him lots more...My heart hurts because I am selfish. I wanna see him again and express my gratitude and shake his hand just once more. Sonny showed us alot. Guess I'll havta wait till I get MY wings up yonder to do that.

You wouldn't remember me but I owned car #85 and ran Southside Speedway, South Boston, Strawberry Hill, and Hampton Speedway in 1971. I was behind Sonny when he bounced completely over the first turn guard rail at Strawberry Hill in practice. I was also there when Tommy Ellis cut through the infield at Southside to try to wreck Sonny and they chased Tommy half way to Florida and had warrants out for assault with a motor vehicle. Yea those were the good ole days. That aside; for a privateer as myself back then, Emmanuel and Sonny as well as Junie were always willing to loan me something or as in most cases "sell" me something I had to have to make the next race, at a price I could afford. Yea those WERE the good ole days. It is indeed with pleasant memories I have of Sonny. Even a nobody like myself was given respect and not just shuffled out of the way. Thanks and "we'll see you later". O. Fulmer Hutchinson, Jr.

Connie,I don't know if you even remember me, but I knew you from our younger days at St. John's. My maiden name was Franklin. Gayle Hollingsworth Shiner was kind enough to send me your husband's death notice. Of course, I never knew him, but I am saddened for you at your loss. It is never easy to lose someone we love. Gayle, Joan (Newell), Marie (Hassel) and I got together this summer and had a wonderful time remembering the old days. We plan to get together again and would love to have you join us if you would like. You can contact me by email or at 804-310-5213. That's my cell phone number and I will be in Richmond during the Christmas holidays. I would love to see you again. In the meantime, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Ellen

To the Hutchins Family,

I know this is a great loss for all of you. I am greatful that I was able to witness his skills on the racetrack and consider him one of the best behind the wheel.

May God comfort you now and the days ahead by your memories of him and the kind words and expression of memories by his many friends and fans.

November 23, 2005

Sonny, you symbolized everything old-school and good in Racing; To me anyway. You were one of the hardest racers I ever saw on the track and one of the kindest gentlemen I ever met off the track. As a Jimmy Hensley fan in my very early, post infant youth, I couldn't justify liking Sonny Hutchins as a person and pulling for Jimmy on the track.

Kids can be stupid like that. After all, you beat Jimmy just about every time I saw the two of you race!

What bugged me so badly back then was that you were without a doubt the most kid-friendly racer anywhere and, as a kid, I couldn't help but think the world of you, even if I WAS a Hensley fan. As I grew older and you grew your trademark beard, I morphed into one of your biggest fans and lived and died with you every week at Southside Speedway, Langley Speedway, South Boston Speedway, and any other speedway where you raced.

I was there when you sent Tommy Ellis for a ride on top of the frontstretch wall at Southside Speedway!

My best year as a Hutchins fan was 1978, when you won 10 races right out of the box. My worst year as a Hutchins fan was also 1978, when your arch-rival Mr. Ellis figured out how to beat you and won an ungodly 27 races from May through October. Dark times, indeed.

I grieved for you in 1979 as you struggled to eek out 1 measly win and then rejoiced and thumped my chest when you came back with a vengeance in 1980 to win the championships at Southside, South Boston, and the state of Virginia. Then I turned 16, got into girls and you retired from racing the next year after your heart attack at South Boston. I don't think life was ever quite so simple or beautiful again for me.

Just the knowledge that you've moved on leaves me sad beyond words, but as you can tell the memories you gave me as a child growing into an awkward adolescent and into a young man will last forever, more than enough to last until I meet you again and challenge you to that match race we never got around to down here. ;-)

I'm sure Ray Hendrick and Runt Harris met you at the door, grinning about beating you to the finish line one last time.

Gentlemen, start your eternity!

Godspeed, my friend.

My condolences to Sonny's family.

I will always remember Sonny Hutchins for his laughter, smiling cherub face and absolutely fearless driving style. He would listen very nicely to Junie or Manny as they would tell him how to drive and then go out and ignore them, especially the part about taking it easy. The last time that I saw Sonny was a year or so ago when Junie called him to say that one of his biggest fans was in town. Even though he was still recovering from an operation he drove over to spin some of his wonderful stories, and some of them were even true. Sonny, we all miss you.

My deepest sympathy to all the Hutchins family at this time. Sonny Hutchins was equally as helpful to folks away from the track as he was competitive on the track as some stories have been related to me. Anyone who is thought of as highly as the previous messages indicate had to have a great heart for helping others. All of mankind is better for the examples set by Sonny over the years. All of the greater racing community is diminished by his passing, but the examples of the man and our remembrances of him will live on in each of us. I will be eternally grateful for having lived through the times when he made lasting impacts on all of us through his racing accomplishments along with his examples for all of us. May God's richest blessings and comfort be with all the Hutchins family now and always.

Dearest Connie and family:

I was shocked today when I learned that Sonny had passed away. It seems unbelieveable! For some reason, I just never thought that Sonny could pass on. One of my fondest memories was as a child of 5 years of age, going to the Hut with my father, and Sonny carrying me on his shoulder, and spinning me around at the counter stool. He used to fix my favorite "grown up drink" a Shirley temple.

Later my husband and I would go to all of the races that Sonny ever participated in. In fact, we went from Richmond to Langley one time, and found out that his car had blown up during practice and he had left the speedway to go home. We followed suit. If Sonny didn't race, we didn't race!

I guess now Ray Hendrick and Sonny can race on that big racetrack in the sky. What a comforting thought.

He is truly one of the last real racedrivers that knkew how to drive any kind of car, it didn't have power streering he manhandled that Emanuel Zervakis 01 like an artist panting on a canvas.

GOD BLESS YOU IN YOUR TIME OF SORROW.

Words cannot explain the feeling I had when I found out that Sonny had passed away. I had the pleasure of growing up with him at the racetrack in the 80's. He drove a car owned by John Britt that my father worked on. I have a picture of Sunny and I on the fender of the trailer at South Boston Speedway. I can never remember a time that he didnt take the time to stop and sign an autograph or take a picture that a fan wanted. Sunny was a great man on and off the track. I always remember the stories my dad would tell me about Sunny singing on the radio during a race like he was having the time of his life. Sunny is and always will be my hero.

Growing up in Richmond, Virginia I was introduced to Southside Speedway in my teen years and loved it. Had the chance to meet and get to know Sonny through a young racer I was seeing at the time. He was every bit the gentleman as well as a great racer. It was always so much fun to go to the races every Friday night. I have very fond memories of my great Uncle Sonny. He was a fun loving person and a joy to be around. I always looked up to him and I was so excited to see him last February when I came to visit. I remember as a youngster Uncle Sonny taking me to the track, taking me into the pits, and introducing me to drivers that I would have never had the chance to meet otherwise. Whether it was at the Attaché, at the track, or through his travels through Richmond; when I was with him he always made me feel like I was his right hand man. I will truly miss him and he will always hold a special place in my heart.

Sonny Hutchins competed against some of the greatest drivers in the history of motorsports, and stood tall among them. Equally respected on both sides of the track, Sonny was a fan favorite wherever he raced... and children adored him for the time he took to speak to all who came to him. If ever there was a person who could truly be called a cornerstone of Motorsports, it was the legendary Sonny Hutchins.

Automobile Racing is all the better because of fine people such as Sonny Hutchins... and he will always be remembered for the contributions he made and the quality of man he was.

One of my fondest memories is sitting in Sonny's car when I was about 6 years old and having my picture taken with the biggest smile on my face. My dad still has the picture, some 30 years later.
