Ronnie Sox "The Boss," 67, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Burlington, N.C., lost his courageous battle with prostate cancer at his home on Saturday, April 22, 2006. The Boss, as he was often referred to, was in the minds of many, the greatest drag racer in the history of the sport. His following and his fan base, even to this day, was a true testament to his success both on and off the drag strip. Ronnie is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Alecia Diane Sox; his faithful and loyal Maltese, Phoebe Mae Sox of Richmond, Va.; his father, Willard M. Sox of Burlington, N.C.; three sons, Dean (Lynn) Sox and Jeff Sox, all of Mt. Olive, N.C., Mike (Tammy) Page, of Mebane, N.C.; one daughter, Rhonda Poleo of Kure Beach, N.C.; two brothers, Tommy (LaRue) Sox, and David (Pam) Sox; one sister, Sandra (O'Delle) Binkley, all of Burlington, N.C.; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of other family members; his two lifelong friends, Bill and David McCaskill of Burlington, N.C., Lloyd (Erma) Desper of Richmond, Va.; fellow racers, all his golfing buddies at Shamrock Golf Course, many devoted and loyal fans; and last but not least, longtime racing partner and friend, Buddy Martin and wife, Carolyn, of Fayetteville, N.C. The family extends a special thanks to Bon Secours Hospice and Doctors Sam and Richard Graham, Katie Lloyd and Bernie Tisdale. The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 26, 2006 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Woody Funeral Home, Parham Chapel, 1771 Parham Road. Simply in my opinion the greatest Pro stock driver period. May God bless his family and heaven allow him to rave.

It's hard to believe fourteen years have passed since Ronnie left us. He is missed and I hope he always will be by those who met him, saw him race and enjoyed his friendship. His contribution to the Golden Age of drag racing is such that he, along with a handful of other drag racers, form the Mt. Rushmore of the sport. The Sox & Martin team was a very professional group of dedicated people who helped legitimize the sport. I'm not sure how Ronnie would view today's version of the sport but I'm sure he would have found a way to be very competitive. Thanks again Ronnie. You were indeed The Boss!

Growing up in Virginia and into drag racing in the 60 and 70s my first drag race was in a little town in Waynesboro VA. A little church town where the drag strip couldnt open on Sunday until after church was over. So right after church I was like 13 years old and my uncle took me and my cousin to East Side Speedway. He said you got to see this team of Sox And Martin race. Well I fell in love with the Cuda and couldnt imagine how fast that car was. Sox and Martin even shook my hand and gave me a poster of them and to this day I still have it. And Im 64 years old. They are the true pioneers and class act of race car drivers. I actually own a 1970 roadrunner to this day. After seeing them race I was hooked mopar and when I turned 16 I bought my first car a 1968 roadrunner 383 four speed for 200 dollars in 1972. Thank you Ronnie for letting me follow you and your racing career and I will always remember the day you shook my hand and I will take it to my grave that I met the greatest shifter on earth.

Its been thirteen years ago today that you left us and you, as always, are still missed. I've been a Sox and Martin fan since I was fifteen years old and have so many great memories of you and your driving skills. You will always be my favorite driver from the Golden Age of Drag Racing. No one could stir a Hurst shifter the way and as quickly as you did. These days door slammer racing just isn't as much fun as it was back in the heyday of Super Stock racing and I'm thankful you were able to race and win during those long gone days. Thanks again for all you did.

I am a feature writer on Challengerforum and wrote a special tribute to Ronnie ("Mr. 4-Speed"). It can be found at:
https://www.challengerforum.com/articles/ronnie-sox-a-tribute-to-mr-four-speed.14/

The article starts out as follows:

"Ronnie Sox is one of the greatest Mopar drag racers. Like many who eventually became professional racers, 'The Boss,' grew up around cars, raised in the shadow of his familys Sinclair service station. As soon as he was old enough to drive, Sox began competing in drag races, sponsored by the Police Club of Burlington, NC, at a local airport. In the early days, Sox didnt even own a car and used his fathers 1949 Olds. From these humble beginnings, Sox would go on to become what many describe as the best 4-speed driver that ever lived. From the mid-1960s though the mid-1970s, the team of Sox and Martin were usually the ones to beat in Super Stock or Pro Stock. Sox was the winningest driver of all time in Pro Stock..."

A truly great memory and equally time of life, those days are the glory days of Drag Racing always will be. You transported your own car, you financed a great deal of it, you worked on your own car,
you raced your own car.
Why would someone go through all that time, trouble and expense.
Love of the Drag! It's in your blood. It breaths life into you.
As a spectator it gave me some of the same thrill, thanks for that.
I hope there is 1320' in your heaven.

While working in NC in 1961 on many Sundays I would go to Sanford drag strip. Saw Ronnie race what I think was a 61 Impala 409 Chevy. The big event of the day was a match race between a Pontiac, Chevy and a 60 Ford. All were SS class except the Ford which was running a four speed tranny and we all know it was 62 before Ford had a factory four speed. If anyone remembers anything about these days at Sanford contact me on FB Messenger.

When I was a teenager I saw Ronnie at Sanford Drag strip in Sanford, North Carolina. Back then he drove the 409 Chevy, and what a hero he was to me. Years later while I was serving in the USAF I was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi and had the opportunity to see Ronnie in 1966. Thanks for the good memories Ronnie. I hope there's a good drag strip in heaven!

Good Morning, I am from Burlington, NC where I graduated from WHS in 1960. I was about four years younger than Ronnie but I did meet him a couple of times at the Drag Strip. The first time I head of him was in the late 1950's when He and Wink Kerns (I think I got it right) were caught Dragging down Church Street in Burlington. In those days the police were a lot better to deal with (nothing was life or death) If I remember right they were both driving 1958 chevys' (I am 73 years young and sometimes I forget things) I just wanted to say RIP Ronnie, I am a two time cancer survivor (Melanomia, level 4, and Prostate Cancer) I was fortunate to have caught my Prostate Cancer early and I too went to Duke. (with success) By the way my career at Williams was a bit colorful and think God for some good teachers and a great Principal. Wishing Ronnie "Fair Winds and following Seas" Bud Dowdey WHS 1960, Elon 1968. As a film producer I had often though about a Documentary on Drag Racing; but never had the chance, I would have loved to meet Ronnie and talk with him but it just didn't happen, but perhaps in the future, I know he is Driving in Heaven.

As a young lad in the mid 60's I feel in love with drag racing. I was the ripe old age of 6yrs. when I began nagging my father to take me to the drags. We lived in Claremont only miles from Pomona drag strip and from my backyard I could hear the racing.
I cannot recall wether it was Pomona or Irwindale or possibly Ontario that I met Mr. (Ronnie) Sox, but somehow my father arranged it.
Those years had sort-of-gotten away from me until this morning.
Through conversation I found that Ronnie Sox had passed and with all seriousness felt a real loss.
My father just passing in May of this year, I have begun recalling those days now passed.
Some of the greatest times with my Dad were going to the Drag Races and watching all of the greats in those glory days. I feel privileged to have been present at several of those events.
Condolences are perhaps way to late although I will say this,
thanks so much Ronnie Sox for providing a wonderful memory in my life, watching you race and getting to meet you especially as a young boy is one of the absolute highlight of growing up.
You left us waaayy to soon, but you have left an immortal legacy.

I started following Ronnie's career as a 17 year old. I always enjoyed seeing him race his 426 Hemi 'Cuda against Grumpy Jenkins 427 Camaro. He was the main reason why I bought a 1971 'Cuda and remain a MOPAR fan to this day. I currently drive a 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT 8.

When i moved to Greensboro in 1957, my next door neighbor was Mike Cecil. Mike was a fist cousin to Ronnie Sox. We went to Piedmont Drag strip many times and watched Ronnie race. I remember a 1958 Chevrolet Impala that Ronnie drove a Piedmont..he could really make that car go down the strip. Sorry to hear of his passing. Bill Kemp

I was a young teenage parts guy at a small Chrysler dealer in Frankfort, Kentucky and loved drag racing. I went to Lexington as a young shy guy and was in awe of the whole Sox & Martin clinic experience. By the time the night was over I felt like I was part of the team. Ronnie could make YOU feel important and not to be in awe of him. That's why he has so many fans! I am sure now that the Grump has passed he has already outrun him in heaven!

I met Ronnie at a small track in Thompson Ohio back around 1971 if I remember right. It was an AHRA track I think and he was there for a match race. I was 16 at the time but had a 67 Barracuda there racing it. Being a Mopar nut (one of several from our high school) I knew who Ronnie was and how important he was to drag racing even then. He took the time to speak to us and answer a few questions and had such a remarkable likeable personality that I have never forgot that day. In 1993 I met him again at the 25 year reunion of the 68 Super Stock Darts and Barracudas. I still have a T-shirt that he signed and a couple pictures he gave me from that day. You left an impression on me. First Class and a humble man. Thanks for the memories my friend.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Ronnie Sox being a younger guy but as a big mopar and drag racing enthusiast i am a huge fan. Ronnies incredible driving skill and dedication to his sport is amazing. I had the pleasure of attending the mopar nationals a few years ago and attended the sox and martin tribute it was the experience of a lifetime for me to see the cars on the track. I purchased a signed S&M diecast from Eavers car museum in mint springs Va he has one of Ronnies cars on display its the prize of my collection. Back in'69 at Indy I got to witness the most awe-inspiring man doing what he did best. As Ronnie finished his burn-out and pulled to the line my dad said, son you're about see why Ronnie Sox is called "Mr. 4 spd." That 4 spd. sounded like an automatic transmission. The fact that he was driving a Mopar product made it even better. I always tried to keep-up with the Sox & Martin team. When Ronnie stopped driving I lost a lot of interest in drag racing. I'll never forget the day I found out Ronnie was gone. One of my idols who I thought immortal was gone. I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2010. After the removal of 2/3 of my colon along with tumor and 6 mos. of chemo I was still cancer-free in March of this year. I go for check-ups with my oncologist every 3 mos. I wish so very much Ronnie were still with us. I'd love to have him open a driving school. I'd hock my house to be able to attend.

Brent Gaiser

May 29, 2012

I had the privelage of meeting " The Boss" several years ago. I attend races and car shows as much as I can. In general when meeting a driver I go away with the impression they are a body part found on the human posterior. They seem either too busy or bored to relate to the fans who made them what they are. I am pleased to say such was not the case with Ronnie. Even though he had retired as a driver he seemed to still have a passion for the sport in which he was a true great one. He was gracious and seemed to really enjoy his time spent with fans. It will certainly be a fond memory to me, rubbing elbows with quarter mile royalty and not being adressed as a subject, but just two gear heads swapping stories and having fun with what they love.

I remember Ronnie's place on Church St in Burlington back in the 60's & 70's when I was growing up. I loved to see the red, white, and blue Cuda sitting out front. I left Burlington in the mid 70's and then moved to Welcome, NC in '85. Ronnie and the Sox & Martin team was to Burlington as Dale Earnhardt was to Welcome. He was one of the greatest!

I first met ronnie sox and his team mates buddy martin and jake king back in the late 60's at raceway park in englishtown, nj. I cut school many times to go to raceway park. I was standing there watching jake king changing a tire on the famous 68 cuda...the next thing I remember is ronnie sox asking me to help him change the tire...and few years later I went to york us 30 dragstripe in pa to watch the super stock match races...as I walked over to the S & M camps...ronnie sox looked over to me said hello like he remembered me from englishtown...he has been with since that time and as of today I still collect the teams items...thank you

I have been away from Drag racing since 1972. When I bought my 1970 340 Duster new, I immediately joined the Sox and Martin Super Car Club and proudly had their red white and blue decal on the side window, and proceeded to win 8 trophies with the car in P/S Class in the 70-71 NHRA seasons using the Sox and Martin ideas of tuning etc. I later used one of their Pinion Snubbers on the car. I have just re-joined the NHRA and as well learned of Ronnie's passing. I met him at Windsor Dragway and after telling him I was a Club member, was thrilled to get an autographed photo. He will be very much missed by this ex racer.

I just found out about Ronnies passing the other day. I knew that he was sick, and he came to mind when I stumbled across a photo he had signed for me. I searched the web only to find out the sad news. I saw him race throughout the south back in the 70's and my jaw would hit the ground when I watched this man drive.
One of my fondest memories of him was in Person County Drag Strip in NC. A big match race meet in the early 70's with Ronnie,Dyno-Don,Grumpy,and Gapp & Roush. The strip in Person county ended very suddenly after going through the traps by the means of dropping down a hill. The cars would drop out of sight when they finished their runs and then turn around to come back down the return lane. I can't remember who Ronnie matched up with(think it was Grumpy),but Ronnies Baracuda won and dropped over the hill. You could hear both cars hard on the brakes and downshifting to slow down. The funny thing I remember was when Ronnie came over the hill back to the pits, his tires were laced with NC red clay indicating he had gone to the woods to stop this beast....never saw that happen to any other racer.Still have some old pictures of that event. It left a lasting impression with me as to how fast that HEMI was.
I was very fortunate through those years to watch and talk with him on occasions.
May God bless him.

To The Sox Family,

Tonight ( 7/17/07 ) I was watching a car show, it made mention of Ronnie ..... "in memory of". WHAT ??? I had no idea, was shocked, got on line and found this site. Many, many years ago, in the sixties, I would watch the Sox and Martin car race at Thompson Drag Raceway, just east of Cleveland, Ohio. Although I was a GM nut, it brought the hair up on my neck to watch Ronnie burn the opposition to the ground. Certainly he was an inspiration to me and, being close to Ronnie's age tells us tomorrow is promised to no one. I now understand that fact, now realize I am not invincible. Ronnie, thanks for the fond memories, may you rest in peace with our Lord.

I'm sorry to hear about the lost of your loved one. I know its hard having to deal with losing a loved one and losing one that was loved by many as Ronnie was by all that knew him. Sometimes its hard to find words to say in times like these, but all I can say is " God knows best". You were there every step of the way until God called Ronnie home. Call on God and he'll be right there. Diane you will be in our prayers. Ronnie is alright now, God's got him in his care! God bless you!!

November 11, 2006

Diane,

I'm sorry its taken so long to express my condolences, but Ronnie's passing had a huge impact on us Mopar nuts. I truly miss hearing from him from time to time.

Diane, I won't even begin to try and tell you how special Ronnie was to everyone that knew him, but I will tell you how special you were to him. Ronnie told me the story of how you two met when you were only 23 and he was 40. When you guys parted back then it was very tough on the guy. Ronnie told me that he had never loved any woman the way he loved you, but at the time he just never thought it would work because of the age difference.

When Ronnie called me in 1999 and said Charlie you'll never guess who I'm dating again, I'm back with the "love of my life" Diane. Next thing I knew he was getting married. When I heard he was diagnosed shortly after you guys married I called him. He was very down the day I called and he amazed me as he expressed more concern about how this would impact you and your life. Here the guy was going to be facing the fight for his life and he was worried about you. Ronnie expressed numerous times how truly unfair it was to you. But he told me that you said to him - "Honey, we will get through this together, we will fight this battle together till the bitter end, and I'll be there every step of the way with you, remember for better or worse, in sickeness and in health, till death do us part..." Diane, Ronnie told me that he knew then just how much you really did love him and he knew without a doubt he could count on you to be there for him every step of the way which gave him great comfort.

Diane, try not to be sad, but instead remember the strong love between you two, the happy moments, the laughs, and most of all remember that Ronnie is in a better place and is no longer in pain. He may be gone but he will never be forgotten.

May God continue to bless you and comfort you in the days ahead. If you need anything, don't hesitate to call on me.

Although I didn't really know your father well, I did know you, and knew how much you loved him. I, to this day still brag about meeting The Great, "Ronnie Sox" and his wonderful son, Dean! I accidently ran upon his death notice while on the internet today, (10/27/06). I am so sorry to hear this news. I too, lost my mother to cancer in August of 2005. She was my closest friend, and as you may still remember, was a beautiful person inside and out. I will be thinking of you; be strong.

I had the honor of watching Ronnie during the early 60's on the east coast around DC. Yes he was Mr. 4 speed, but he also liked to 'miss' a shift as he was warming up the tires. You have left a hole, but are remembered by your many fans.

It's rare in our automotive world to find someone that was truly liked and respected by everyone that knew them. To reach the top of your game without stepping on fans or competitors is what makes a legend. Ronnie is that legend.

I never had the opportunity to meet Ronnie. However as a child, the Sox and Martin team is what got me focused on cars and drag racing. To date I am still a car freak as they are the love of my life. Should anyone of ever made an impression on me and the drag racing world, it was Ronnie. You are truley Mr. Mopar as far as I am concerned and God's Speed Ronnie.

I have a 1964 Comet a/fx clone. I have always had Ronnies' number on the windshield, 715 A/FX. Met Ronnie and Buddy at Blaney Drag Strip, Elgin, South Carolina when he drove the 'cuda. I have an autographed picture with both signatures. Few people can say they made a differance in this world, Ronnie you DID!!! Thanks for giving me the opportunity to see you race! You were a master.
