Roy Sox Obituary

Roy Wayne "R.W." Sox

June 10, 1934 - June 8, 2025

Lexington, South Carolina - Roy Wayne "R.W." Sox, passed away on June 8, 2025 at the age of 90. Roy was born in Lexington, South Carolina to Luther Maxey and Mary Ellen Sox and was the eighth of twelve children. He was a graduate of Lexington High School class of 1952.

Roy married his high school sweetheart, Helen Taylor Sox, on May 23, 1953 and remained married for 44 wonderful years until her death in 1997.

Roy had a long career with Southern Bell in Columbia that lasted for 35 years. His career was the source of many stories which he was more than happy to share with you if given the opportunity. He also served as a cook in the National Guard for nine years in his younger days. In retirement, he enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and telling stories about both.

Roy was lucky enough to meet Seretha Koon Gunter while on the walking track at Tri-City Leisure Center in West Columbia. They fell in love and were married in 1999. He and Seretha were married for 25 lovely years until her death on April 12, 2025. During their marriage, they enjoyed traveling in the U.S. as well as Lake Murray life until Parkinson's disease slowed him down. Over the years, both were active members of Beulah Methodist Church of Gilbert, SC.

He is survived by his children, Nancy (Lin) House of Gilbert, Robert Sox of Columbia, Tim Sox (Cheryl) of West Columbia, and Scott Sox of Lexington; grandchildren, Cody Sox (Dora) of Gaston, Luke Sox of Lexington, and Cooper Sox (Callie) of West Columbia; and great grandchildren, Rowan Sox and Roy Sox. His surviving stepsons are Greg Gunter (Dianne) and Dewey Gunter (Elaine) and numerous step grandchildren and step-great grandchildren. Roy also has three surviving siblings: Joyce Smith (David), Carol Ann Sox, and Larry Sox (Charlene), as well as sister-in-law Alice Sox and a large group of nieces and nephews.

In addition to Helen and Seretha, he was predeceased by his parents, Luther and Mary Sox; siblings, Melba Arnold, John Sox, Grace Hannon, Thomas Sox, Jane Amaker, Billy Sox, Russell Sox, and Allen Sox; as well as his stepson, Gene Gunter.

The family wishes to thank the caring staff of The Heritage at Lowman Nursing Care as well as Lutheran Hospice for their kindness and care over the last year.

A service is scheduled for Friday, June 13, 2025 at St. David Lutheran Church in West Columbia. Visitation with the family will be held at the church from 11:00am to 12:00pm before the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beulah Methodist Church of Gilbert or the Parkinson's Foundation.
