It is with much saddness that we reflect on our friendship with Ted. There is no doubt that he was admired and respected by all his colleagues and students. We were fortunate to know Ted also as a friend. He was an excellent cupid in our lives and his love of the natural world, expecially birds, has influenced us to this day. Among all of his qualities he was also a romantic. The support and encouragement he gave to Rosemary and his friends bespeaks of a generosity of spirit that is rare. To Rosemary and all who knew Ted I am reminded of this Celtic prayer-
Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shinning stars to you.
Vale Ted

Ted was a colleague and friend during the time he and Rosemary were in Warrnambool, Australia. He made a major contribution to his discipline, introducing a new rigour to the "American school" of communication (as opposed to the wave of cultural studies which was rising). He was instrumental in the development of the Centre for Communication Research and the establishment of the Public Relations degree at Warrnambool, which is now a campus of Deakin University in Victoria.
He was an avid bird watcher, a worthy disputant in our frequent debates on politics and international events, and a good drinking companion. Vale Ted. I am only too sorry that you were unable to make the planned trip to Tasmania. We had so much to debate! You will be sorely missed by Rosemary. My thoughts are with her.

Ted was a joy to work with, and we at Monsanto were blessed to have him as a colleague and partner. He made us better communicators, but more importantly, better people. Thanks to his family for sharing his wisdom and joy with us. Our thoughts are with you.

I am surprised and sad to learn of Ted's death. Persons of his character, intelligence, gentleness and grace are rare and invaluable. I am sorry that he is gone so much before his time, and especially sorry for those who knew him best, loved him most, and thus will most deeply feel his loss.

Please accept my condolences on your loss of this wonderful gentleman and scholar. I've known Ted for over a decade through the National Association of Scholars, and always especially looked forward to getting to talk to him, for whenever I did, I learned a great deal, and had a wonderful time doing so. At the 2002 NAS Board of Directors meeting, I had the pleasure of sitting next to Ted at dinner, who was one of the most brilliant and amusing conversationalists I've ever met. What a gift he was to the world, what a privilege to know him. May God be with you, at this time, and always.
With warmest regards,
Laurie Morrow

Dear Rosemary,
We were deeply saddened by news of Ted’s death. We hope he did not suffer too much near the end. In my last conversation with him in November he demonstrated great courage in the face of his health problems. We will always remember him as a fine leader and colleague in the VAS and as a fine person. We will miss him mightily.
You have our deepest sympathies and very best wishes.

Ted was my predecessor, and my successor, as president of the Virginia Association of Scholars. His tireless defense of the rights of academics in a society of free and responsible individuals should NEVER be forgotten. He will be sorely missed.

My thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Smith's wife and family. The school of mass communications will never be the same without him. A brilliant and funny man, he truly will be missed.
