Katie Houlihan Obituary

Houlihan, Katie MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. Katelyn Elizabeth Houlihan passed away suddenly Sunday, May 25, 2008 in St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Fla. She was 23. Katie, as she was known by her adoring family and friends, was living in Madeira Beach, and was enrolled in the business management program at the University of South Florida College of Business in St. Petersburg. Born September 27, 1984 in Schenectady, N.Y., Katie was the daughter of Janet Elizabeth Belden Houlihan, originally of Benson, Vt. and Milford, N.H. and John Francis Houlihan of Schenectady. Her maternal grandparents are the late Rita Knight Belden and Russell Harvey Belden of Benson and Milford; her paternal grandparents are Lucille Watson Houlihan and the late Judge James P. Houlihan of Schenectady. Katie graduated from Schenectady High School in 2002 and attended Schenectady County Community College, graduating Summa Cum Laude with an associate degree in humanities in 2004. She was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honors Society. Following graduation, she moved to Fla. to continue college. Katie loved all children, but especially loved her nephew, Sam, with whom she was a kindred spirit. Sam loved his Aunt Katie even more than his favorite toys and Katie looked forward to her visits home to see her Sammy and her new niece, Clara. She couldn't bear to be away from her niece and nephew for too long. Katie also loved her Fla. surroundings, especially the local beaches, where she often spent time with her many best friends. She could be frequently found dancing to a favorite song, or just laying in the sun on St. Pete or Madeira beaches. Thanks to her sister Kelly and their trips together, Katie developed a love of nature. She often watched the dolphins from the dock at her apartment; she spontaneously picked flowers to wear in her hair. Katie had a radiant smile, a radiance from head to toe. She was recognized as amazingly beautiful by those who knew her. She loved to help people look and feel their best - she had dreams of owning a business on the beach that would offer both. She was also a part-time poet and philosopher who spent many hours, especially with her sister Shannon, talking about what she thought it meant to lead a positive life - she thought hard about how she could help those in her life who had problems. Katie would do anything, day or night, to help out a friend in need and always worked to make those around her smile - one of her favorite mottoes was "live, love, and laugh." Katie was vivacious and she could throw a football like a quarterback. She loved to compete with her male friends at anything, and was proud to be both Irish and a renowned poker player. She treasured her relationship with family, especially her mother, who gave her the freedom to follow her own path. She always knew her mom would be there for her no matter what. Katie is survived by her mother, Janet Houlihan of Charlton, N.Y.; her father, John Houlihan of Schenectady; her sister, Shannon Maureen Houlihan and brother-in-law John Warren of Chestertown, N.Y.; her sister, Kelly Marie Leone and brother-in-law Larry Leone of Charlton; her nephew, Samuel Dominick and new niece, Clara Josephine Leone; her grandmother, Lucille Houlihan of Glenville, N.Y.; her boyfriend, Eric Cahill of St. Petersburg, Fla.; her dearest friends, Megan Reidy of Las Vegas, Nev. and Lori Duffy of St. Petersburg; and her many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. Friends and family are invited to join the family for their final goodbyes on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at DeMarco Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam. A service will follow at 7 p.m. Honoring her generous spirit, most of Katie's belongings have been donated to the women's shelter in St. Petersburg. Memorial donations may be made to the Schenectady Free Health Clinic, 600 Franklin St., Room 205, Schenectady, NY 12305 or the Disabled American Veterans, Lt. Vibert O. Fryer Chapter 88, 2639 Hamburg St., Schenectady, NY 12303.

To Katie, and her family:

I don't know if it's ever too late to convey one's condolences, but I wish to do so today. I was friends with Katie back in elementary school, and unfortunately did not find out about her passing until well after the services. I certainly would have attended. As the waves of grief and loss ebb and flow I wish strength and fortitude for your loved ones.

There are times when I look at my daughter and think of you and am sad that you never got to experience the joy of having a child of your own. It makes me appreciate every precious moment even more. It's been decades since we were friends but I still think of you often and will always cherish the memories I have of you.

A year tomorrow, and I finally write in this.. I've read through these pages so many times and read how much everyone loved her. I miss my cousin so much. I can honestly say that my life is not the same without her. I used to look forward to every Thanksgiving visit because I would get to see my family, and ultimately Katie. I guess I never realized how great she was until she was gone. I loved, and still love her so much, and one day hasn't passed that I haven't thought of her. I will never forget her, and I will smile every time I think of her; thinking of how happy she was, or still is.

Katie was the only one who could sweet talk me into going to that restaurant Garcia's. She would always win a deep fried ice cream from the gumball machine. Katie and the ice cream always made in bearable.

I worked with Katie on Treasure Island for about a year or so. Immediately, Katie and I became friends. We used to dance all night long to our favorites songs. We had our own little dances that no one could even match. We did special, spontaneous things together that could never be replaced. She was such a fun and loving person. No one could ever replace her. I love her and miss her very much!!! To her family - I am so sorry! My thoughts and prayers are with all of you!

To the Family of Katie,
Even though I never met Katie, I felt compelled to write. Her testament that you wrote of her life was beautiful. She has inner beauty as well as an outer beauty that can never be matched. It is so tragic to see a young person pass but your Katie , by the portrayal of her life, did more than people do if they live to be 100. Treasure her memories and her love for her family and friends and she will live on in your heart forever. We are truly sorry for your loss and we are praying for Katie's family and love ones.

Katelyns Death was a horrible thing, so young and beautiful. I knew a few people who were friends with katie and I felt that I should give my respect to family and friends even though I didn't know her. I was working in the Emergency Room the evening she came in and I along with everyone else working stopped everything to do all we possibly could to help and to keep her with us, she was the only thing important. I'm so sorry for everyones loss, I wish that there was more that could have been done. That is one night that I'll never forget...R.I.P.

We were so sorry to hear of the loss of Katie. Life is so very precious and we never know when our journey will come to an end, but with this ending, comes a new beginning with the everlasting love that she left for all of you. Her love for life, especially her appreciation for sunny days, the sounds of the ocean waves which bring peace and overtakes any troubles. Her spirit will live in the quietness of a sunny day, the sea shells that are collected, and calmness in your heart when you think of her. She will live in your hearts forever.

Katie was as beautiful on the inside as she was the outside. Her smile would light up a room. She generated happiness everywhere she went. Friends have left flowers on her doorstep here in Madeira. Some of my fondest memories are waking her up before dawn to go collect seashells, watching the spaceshuttle go up from our dock and sitting on the dock watching the dolphins. She loved her family dearly and would bring over pictures and show us. I hope some comfort may come to her family knowing how much she was loved by her friends and how much she cheered our hearts just being around her.

I did not know Katie well but have a very fond memory of time we spent together when her Mom brought the girls to Florida for vacation. It was Easter weekend and being away from home was no reason not to have the traditional egg hunt. Even then Katie's artistic nature was clear. It wasn't enough to simply dip the eggs in colored water; we had to try to come up with new colors or effects, something to make her eggs special. It takes an extraordinary young lady, full of joy and a zest for life to make an egg hunt for one as much fun to watch as one for many children. Surely Heaven has been blessed to receive a truly special angel.

The world will be a sadder place without Katie's sunbeam of a smile...what a beautiful person, inside and out!
I have a vision of her in Heaven, "dancing to a favorite song" with flowers in her hair, and getting acquainted with all those up there who have been waiting to meet this wonderful girl.
Our love and condolences to the rest of her close-knit family here on earth. She will be sorely missed!

I will always remember the softball games and practices Katie and I use to be involved in. We always hoped that we would be on the same team every year....which usually happened. I will also remember the sleep overs we use to have and the creative things we would come up with to stay entertained.

You will forever be in my heart and I know you will be dearly missed.

I remember Katie as being so positive and such a happy girl back in highschool and i had the pleasure to live with her for awhile before she moved down to Florida. She was always the sweetest person you could meet. she would even let me borrow things from her room when she wasnt home (thats a good friend right there)! i remember spending countless hours in our bedrooms some nights talking about life, she was such a good listener and friend. I wish we could have become better friends but our lives took us in different paths. I will never forget the nights the four of us roomates would go out come back to the apartment hang out till the morning and maybe get some Trios at 4am. Most of the time she would cook her own food (she loved to cooked) while me and the others roomies would buy some McDonalds. That is where i remember her most is the kitchen and those frozen dinner bags she would always buy. She is the one that got us all hooked on frozen food. Katie, I will never forget you....i'm so glad i have the memories i do. You will be very missed!

We all loved Katie; and we all will miss her. Please remain strong and understand that we share your sadness and loss.

Melissa and I were remembering a trip to Rumford in the late nineties. One morning, we all piled into cars and went to out for breakfast, and found ourselves sitting with Katie. We remember talking to her about school, friends, and other things she had going on. She must have been about fourteen. We were struck, even then, by her warmth and her loving spirit - both of which were obvious to anyone who met her, even when she was very young.

Our love and condolences to you all.

Love, Tony, Melissa and the kids
