Eleanor L. Greiling

Greiling, Eleanor L. ALBANY Eleanor L. Greiling, who most recently resided at Atria Crossgate then Daughters of Sarah, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Albany Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Queens, N.Y. on July 5, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Paula and Adolph Hopfer. Eleanor lived most of her married life in Centerport, L.I. and moved to Albany 15 years ago. She had been a member of the Centerport Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary where she and her husband had been longtime active members. Eleanor was quite proud of the fact that she had been a member of AAA since 1947. Upon retirement from Sperry's on L.I., she spent winters in warmer climates because she hated the cold weather. Travel was her passion and avocation - from Papua, New Guinea to Point Barrow, Alaska - from the Taj Mahal through the Panama Canal. She was in China with her bags packed to return home on 9/11. Eleanor enjoyed music, having played the piano for many years. She enjoyed watching TV game shows and strived for a weed-free yard. Her favorite pastime was complaining, with a "B." She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert and a sister, Olga Kays of Sparta, N.J. Eleanor is survived by two children, Carol (Jerry) Flewelling of Altamont and Paula Esmont of Queens; three grandchildren, Karen (Tony) Indilicato and Roger (Kim) Flewelling, all of Altamont and Robert Esmont, a NYC firefighter, of Queens; twin great-granddaughters, Susan and Ann Indilicato; and several nieces and nephews. Her family wishes to thank the staff at Albany Medical Center Hospital for the compassionate and quality health care Eleanor received during her brief stay. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Since she enjoyed exercise and bingo at the Louise Corning Senior Center, contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the center at 25 Delaware Ave., Albany, NY 12210.
