here are many moments over these years I wanted to call my pal, Doug. From the first time we met at SUNY Albany we were fast friends. To say he was an entrepreneur is an understatement. Even in high school, he managed the family apartments, fixing the plumbing, taking care of tenant needs in a responsive way. He built up his Dads successful insurance business and when I ran for US Congress, it was Doug who came to Long Island, lent a valuable hand and made possible my win!

He had a great sense of humor, loved his family intently and was passionate about winter sports and fearless to try anything new. Rest In Peace my cherished friend. Many prayers always for you and for all your beautiful family.

Doug,
You are missed more than words can say and more than any heart should have to feel.....
April and November, the times you looked forward to most.
These November days are different.
Thank you for sharing your passions with me, your love of the Adirondacks, for nurturing me on the slopes of Whiteface and Killington, for pushing me past my comfort level and for believing in me when I needed it most.
Your spirit continues to warm my heart and I am thankful for having had you in my life.
I miss you Private Caller.
Love, Marge

Dougie, Danny, Eileen and family,

May God bless my dear dear friend. He truly was one of a kind ... a man of tremendous good will and a fount of great humor, a generous heart that never could do enough for acquaintances, friends and of course, his loving family, he was self-made, a successful entrepreneur ... who took a fledgling business and built it into one of the Capital District's premier agencies with an envious book of business that allowed him to move into his beloved winterland of snow and skiing; he was athletic and of the environs; his boys were everything to him and so proud was he -- he never hesitated to brag on them ... and he stood by his friends. When I took a long shot (successful) run for US Congres in 1995, Doug took time off and taught the locals on Long Island how upstate did the sign waving (!!) and thanks to Doug and his counsel, I served three terms in the United States Congress ... my heart is broken for my own loss of this giant of a man -- very human though he was -- Doug taught me a lot about life and may God embrace and keep him, my cherished friend who forever shall be alive in my heart. Eileen, Dougie and Danny ... may you be comforted by the love and the pride he held each day of his life for each one of you ... special in your own ways, you sustained, nurtured and loved him and in eternity, my friend Doug rests in your abiding affection, ever-lasting love and his legacy and contributions strengthened by it --as are all of us. He will be sorely missed.

Eileen,
It brought me back to think of you all. My Nursery School days were a long time ago, but even so I have very fond memories of you and Doug as parent helpers and of course of the boys. Ken and I were so sorry to hear of Doug's passing. It sounds like he was doing what he loved. That's the way to live your life. Our very best to you and yours.

To my dearest friends and family, thank you so much for your love and support during this most difficult time. Some of you travelled long distances to be at the memorial service; others sent cards and flowers; and then there were all of his closest friends full of sadness and reminising about their days in in school, on the slopes and boating on Lake St. Catherine and Adirondacks. So many stories. Doug's soul has been liberated and his spirit will be with Doug Jr. and Danny all of their lives.

Visit Danny at Gauthiers in Saranac Lake; he will be running the motel and starting a new era there. With much love to you all, Eileen

Brownell Family:

"Big Doug", as he was known to me, made me the stronger, better person that I am today. He was there to give me that extra push (sometimes literally) to jump off a "cliff" into cold water. When I said "no thanks" to water skiing he was there to convince me to slap those skies’ on and push that boat full throttle. When I was too scared to dive head first into the lake he was there to teach me how. He taught me at a young age to live life to the fullest and not to let your fears get the best of you. For that I am very grateful to have had him as part of my life as a youth. I am truly sorry for your loss. I know he will be missed.

Uncle Doug,

Of all things you are to everyone (and the list could go on and on...), the most common denominator is, friend. Someone who has been there to help me laugh, wipe away the tears, put me in my place when need be and pick me up when i was down. I love you uncle, and will miss you but know you are upstairs telling jokes right now!
Oidhche mhath, tha gaol agam ort. (Goodnight, I love you).

For all who knew my father Doug, thank you, I know in my heart that he had a special place in his heart for all of you. You all knew my father in your own special way and that will never be forgotten. We as a family are very happy that he lived life to the fullest, never missed an opportunity, if it was not worth doing he did not do it. My sorrow runs deep for a man who left this place too early. I will never forget my father Dougie.
Thank you all
Dougie Jr.

To the Brownell family,
I am so sorry for your the lost of Dougie. We graduated HS together and I have many fond memories of our crazy ski trips. I also served on the board with him at the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce and observed his transformation to an accomplished businessman. Whenever I look at the parking lot next to the post office I still think of him. Sincerely,

Dougie, Danny, and the Brownell Family, We were crushed to learn of Mr. B's passing. Funny how people never minded making the trek up North knowing their chops would be busted the entire time...and loving every minute of it. The fond memories and stories (where do we start!?) will live forever. All our love, Nicky, Chuckie, and Annabelle

On behalf of the entire Winne family, we would like you to know how truly sorry we are about your father/brother. He was a man that was full of fun and we always had many laughs when with him.
