Eleanor Hummer Obituary

Hummer, Eleanor J. ORMOND BEACH, Fla. Eleanor Jean Hummer, 84, formerly of Ravena, N.Y., passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008. She was born September 28, 1923, daughter of the late Eugene and Mildred Garrett Hummer. She had lived in Ravena, New York City and Ormond Beach, Fla. Eleanor graduated from Ravena High School in 1941, graduated from Cornell University in 1944 with a bachelor of science degree and attended the Tobe' Coburn School of Fashion in NYC in 1947. Eleanor was a U.S. Navy aerographer veteran stationed in Lakehurst, N.J. and Quonset Point, Long Island. She was a buyer for Macy's, N.Y., where she launched the mini dress in the U.S. after a buying trip to Europe, and Jordan Marsh in Orlando, Fla. After retiring to Fla., Eleanor became active in conservation organizations where she promoted the use of native plants in landscaping. Survivors include three nephews, Eugene, Gregory and Gary Hummer of Mass.; one niece, Lori Hummer; and grandnieces and nephews. Eleanor was predeceased by her brother, Eugene J. Hummer Jr. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19 at the Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena. Burial will follow in Jerusalem Cemetery, Feura Bush. Friends may call at the funeral home prior to the service starting at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach, would be appreciated.
