Matthew Mangan Obituary

Mangan, Matthew W. ALBANY Matthew W. Mangan, 25, of Albany, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at his residence in Albany. Matthew was a 2001 graduate of Albany High School and attended the University of Rochester. In the interim, Matthew worked at Friehofer's Baking Company. Matthew was an accom-plished and talented percussionist, playing with the Empire State Youth Orchestra and Percussion Ensemble. Matthew loved all types of music: classical, jazz but, most of all, classic rock. In his free time, Matthew was an avid reader, a talented artist, and played his drums with passion. He enjoyed going to the movies with his mom, grandma and sister. Matthew was a wonderful son who was loving, gentle, thoughtful and creative. He spent endless hours with his grandparents; he found wisdom and comfort in their conversations and time together. Matthew loved being with his sister, Vanessa and his best friend and brother, Michael. The Mangan boys were always together sharing stories, advice and laughter. Matthew was thoughtful and caring, loved by all, and wrote beautiful letters. When he was away from home, everyone looked forward to receiving a "Matty" letter. His thoughtful words and beautiful descriptions made you feel as though you were with him. He is the beloved son of Patrick I. and Brenda Lee (Caulkins) Mangan of Albany; loving brother of Vanessa and Michael; and cherished grandson of William and Esther Caulkins. Matthew is also survived by many family members and friends including Amparo Coons of Breakabeen, N.Y., Daniel and Joan Mangan of Congers, N.Y., John and Deb Mangan of Pa., Becky and Barry Gray of Delmar; godmother, Helen E. Kania of Oneonta, N.Y.; brother-in-law, Renan Salgado. Matthew is loved and his memory will live on always. Calling hours will be Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Newcomer-Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155 -south of Central Ave). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Teresa of Avila Church on Monday at 9:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Empire State Youth Orchestra (Proctor's Theater, 432 State St., Suite 230, Schenectady, NY 12305). To the Mangan Family:
I was saddened to hear the loss of your son, Matt. I, like John Thomas, was a member of ESYO's orchestra and percussion ensemble with Matt, too, but back then I was incredibly shy and mostly stayed to myself. Still to this day, I often think of ESYO and all the members, particularly the percussionists, and am glad to have been a part of such an organization, as well as having known your son.

In sympathy,

Our family is saddened to hear about Matt. I spent years watching Matt with my son Phil in ESYO & Perc. Ens. and knew he was a gifted musician. We never missed a concert and enjoyed the music along side your family. He will be missed and remembered in our hearts. And so will the music ...

Dear Mangan family,

Matt and I played in both the Percussion Ensemble and Repetoire Orchestra together. In fact, Mrs. Mangan may remember driving the two of us from Percussion to Orchestra rehearsal many a Tuesday. I always viewed Matt as a younger brother. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing a very quiet and shy boy come out of his shell as we grew older through high school. I'll never forget his very calm and laid back demeanor. I think of him often when listening to our study recording of the Percussion Ensemble's performance of "Diabolical Varations" at Tanglewood, which featured him on an extremely challenging Timpani part, which he mastered. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

With Deepest Sympathy,

John Thomas ESYO and ESYPE alum '98

Matt Mangan was a wonderful boy (and someone who I had a gigantic crush on in high school). He always said hello to people in the hallways, always took the time to catch up with you at a party, and remembered stories that you told him. I will remember him as a beautiful, dedicated, and genuine person who made me smile every time I saw him. I am so sorry for your loss and am keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. There are so many people mourning his passing along with you.
