Jordan Hess Obituary

Hess, Jordan S. DELMAR Jordan Hess, resident of the Good Samaritan Adult Home in Delmar, died on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at the VA Hospital after a short illness. Born on September 30, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Hess was a resident of the Capital Region for many years. He studied at Marist and Empire State Colleges. He was honorably discharged after service in World War II. He was a consumer and advocate on behalf of mental health patients, especially those treated by the VA. He was one of the founding members of Fountain House in NYC, a model for psychosocial clubs. He worked for Rehabilitation Support Services and was a lecturer at Marist College. He wrote a book on the political implications of psychiatry. He was named Mental Health Advocate of the Year and was active with numerous advocacy organizations, including the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Hess was a member of several area religious congregations, most recently the Metropolitan Community Church in Albany. He has no surviving relatives. A committal service was held at the Saratoga Veterans National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 31, at 6:30 p.m. in the Great Hall of St. George's Episcopal Church, 30 N. Ferry Street, Schenectady, adjacent to the Schenectady Damien Center in which he was active. Parking and entrance are from Green Street. Memorial gifts may be made to the Schenectady Damien Center (SICM), c/o 930 Albany Street, Schenectady, NY 12307. Arrangements are entrusted to Griswold Funeral Home. Jordan was a sincere and passionate advocate for people with mental illness. He was persistent in pursuing causes he believed in. His quiet dignity and advocacy voice will be missed.
