Major Chieco was an inspiration to those who served under his command. I only worked at the New York State Police Academy for 18 months, but will never forget the opportunities afforded me due to Major Chieco's efforts. My sincerest condolences to his many loved ones.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Deputy Superintendent Chieco. I was 18 years old (to the day) when I started working as a civilian employee at the State Police Academy in 1970. I had the pleasure of working under "Major Chieco" at that time. This was my very first job, so he was my very first "boss", and he was definitely a gentle giant. He made my entry into the working world a great experience. So much so, that I just retired after over 37 years. I often think of those wonderful days under his command. He will be truly missed.

Although I did not know Dep. Supt. Chieco, I certainly appreciate his legacy. My interactions over the years with the staff of the New York State Police Academy, of which he was the founding major, have been an honor and a pleasure. Particularly during the 1993 campaign to create the Gray Rider Monument, the professionalism, pride and gracious hospitality of all academy staff made every stage of the campaign from the fundraising kick-off to the unveiling ceremony run smoothly and successfully. The Academy is the finest institution of its kind in the nation. The training it provides has produced generations of outstanding State Troopers and served law enforcement agencies from around the world. That reputation is traceable directly to the tradition of excellence laid down and the tone set by the man who was in command when it was opened and dedicated in 1969. The state and people of New York owe him a great debt of gratitude.
