Scott Herzog Obituary

Herzog, Scott NEW SCOTLAND Scott Herzog, 61, died at home on August 7, 2008 in the care of his son, family, and hospice, after a six month battle with malignant melanoma cancer. He had a special bond with his son Scott, and concern for his son's future gave him the courage to fight his disease to the bitter end. Born, January 22, 1947, Scott graduated from Voorheesville Central High School in 1965, he then served three years in the U.S. Navy aboard the US Surabachi. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he began to ful- fill his lifelong desire to drive trucks, beginning with Main Brothers Oil Co, and going on to drive for National Molasses, International Transport, Ralph Beyer, Airco Industrial Gases, and Rist Transportation. His second passion was motorcycles. He began riding in the mid seventies, "graduating" to Harley Davidson in the early eighties and continuing to ride until the time of his illness. During the summer of 2007 he was seldom seen when not riding his prized possession, a new full dress touring model. He was also known for his legendary "annual feeds", which were very popular during the eighties tapering off thru last year with the aging of the participants. Scott's home was always open for friends to stop by for relaxation, refreshments and profound conversation. He was a member of the Voorheesville Rod & Gun Club, and American Legion Post. Scott is survived by his son, Scott; brother, Jake (Arlene) Herzog; sisters, Madelon Herzog and Mary (Scott) Berkman; nephews, Ken (Patti) and Erick (Julie) Miller, Jake and Ed Herzog; nieces, Lynn (Thomas) Bragan, Amy and Gabrielle Berkman; and his former wife, Dona Keezer. He was predeceased by his parents Jacob H. Herzog and Madelon P. Pound. The family would like to extend special thanks to all of the friends who helped care for him at home and supported his son Scott in caring for him. Special thanks to Kim Sheldon, Stephanie Lawrence, the Welton family, Adam Lamica, John Mycek and Albany Community Hospice nurses, Sheila McGee and Joe Villa. His son, Scott would like to start a memory book. He would appreciate anyone sending special memories of things they have done with his father. Relatives and friends may visit with Scott's family on Sunday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home, 9 Voorheesville Ave., Voorheesville. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 o'clock Monday morning at the funeral home. Donations in Scott's memory, may be made to Community Hospice of Albany County, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY, 12205. reillyandsonfuneralhome.com

Scott, Jake & Arlene:
My family and I were very sorry to hear about Scott's passing. He and my brother Scott Gardner - as you remember - were inseparable in high school. ScottG loved puttering around and taking engines apart and putting them back together with ScottH. I used to babysit for "little Jake" - that was a long time ago! From the Gardner family to yours we send our heartfelt prayers to you. Our ScottG went on ahead of ScottH on September 9, 2003 to put a hole in heaven's fence so ScottH can slip right in. ScottG also died of cancer. We miss both of them. We knew Madelon and Jake Sr well and spent many a day swimming in the pool and sleigh riding down the hill.
Best regards always, Patricia Gardner, and best wishes from my sister Madeleine Gardner, my father Randy Gardner, my daughter Madeleine Patricia (another Maddy Pat), Dottie Gardner (ScottG's wife) and my mom who passed away just after ScottG on Oct 4, 2003 Madeleine Gardner.

Scott and I had not been close for a long time. I last saw him in 1995 at Jake's sevice and internment. What I remember about Scott most was having a beer in the Heldebergs in the 1970's. It was one of my first (legally) as I just turned 18. "Scott said, "Let me buy ya one - You're old enough to die for your country now."
We then had a discussion about the war and I ended it saying, "You probably think I'm a hippie..." Scott replied, "Your entitled to you own beliefs..." That is how I will always remember my step brother Scott. He was so much more allowing than I judged him to be. He died to young. My heartfelt condolences go out to the whole family. God Bless...

Scotty:
"It doesn't matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was." I heard this quote once and it seemed to fit. I am sure your heart is broken but you are truly an angel for taking care of him and you are such a sweet and kind person. I know you and Steph will never forget the good times.

Scott,
So very sorry to hear about Scott, he was a great guy and we will all miss him. I've learned that losing a parent is like losing the North Star, you totally lose all sense of direction. Rely on the love and strength of family and friends. Trust that your dad is still with you in spirit and always will be-he's gonna be watchin' over you. We have great memories of the parties and feeds and times spent with you and your dad, we will cherish those days and we love you. May God bless you and help you through this.

Scotter,
I can't imagine what you're feeling. I know it must hurt, but he's no longer in pain. He is in a better place. Just remember when you hear the thunder that he's up there with his parents having fun bowling! I will always remember the Uncle Scott he was when I was little. I will miss him.

Jake,Arlene,"young"Scott,
I grew up with Scott--he was always a neighbor and we would sleigh ride down the great hill in front of the house on Bullock Rd. Lots of memories from school and then later our Class Reunions. Scott always came on his motorcycle and seemed to enjoy seeing ol class mates. Thoughts and prayers are with you all. He will be missed greatly.
