John Matey Obituary

Matey, John Jr. SLINGERLANDS John Matey Jr. entered into eternal life Sunday morning, August 10, 2008 at Ellis Hospital with his family at his side. Born in 1924 in Johnson City, N.Y., he was the son of John Sr. and Susan P. Matey and broth-er of the late Michael Matey. John enlisted in the United States Navy upon graduation from high school and served with distinction aboard the USS Palmer in the Pacific Theater. John joined the New York Telephone Company at the conclusion of World War II and enjoyed a career in engineering and network administration. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and actively participated in local events. He was also an active member of the First Lutheran Church of Albany where he was a member of the choir. His hobbies included golfing, travel, and grand parenting. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Jane McGowan Matey; and children, Pamela A. McVey of Oneonta, N.Y., John Matey III of Newburgh, N.Y., and Mary-Sue Storey of Prescott, Ky. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, John, Danielle, Maggie, Mark, Soma, Abigail, and Henry. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Frederick Funeral Home, 633 Central Ave., Albany. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church of Albany, 181 Western Ave., Albany. Inurnment will take place on Friday at 1 p.m. in Graceland Cemetery, Albany.
