Kimberly Schoening Obituary

Schoening, Kimberly DELMAR, N.Y. Kimberly Schoening, 53, of Delmar, passed away Monday, August 25, 2008, at her home. Kim was the eldest of six children in an active family "headquartered" in Kenmore, Wash. During her childhood, she was involved and a leader in Girl Scouts, a pioneering participant in organized girls soccer, and an incredible, loving big sister to her younger siblings. After graduating from Oregon State University, where she competed in varsity women's soccer, and working for several years for AT&T in Portland, Ore. as an engineer, Kim set out in 1981 with one of her sisters to hike the Appalachian Trail. The trip changed the direction of her life when she met the love of her life: fellow AT thru-hiker Rich Wilsey. After a few years of courtship in Seattle, Kim and Rich were married and, in 1985, moved back to Upstate N.Y. to live and raise a family near Rich's family in Selkirk. Throughout her years as a mother and homemaker in Delmar, Kim had made numerous contributions to Cub and Girl Scouts, her church, and her boys' school and sports activities. She maintained contact with her family in Washington State by serving as director of the family's annual summer "Cousin Camp." Kim loved the outdoors, and enjoyed many outdoor adventures by canoe, bike, or foot with her friends and family. Her greatest joy and pride, however, comes from her two boys and husband. Kim is survived by her two boys, Christopher and David Wilsey; her husband, Rich; her mother; five siblings; and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins. A memorial service to remember and celebrate her life will be held on Friday, August 29 at 6:00 p.m. in the large pavilion in Elm Avenue Park in Bethlehem. Memorial contributions in Kim's honor may be made to the Bethlehem Soccer Club (tel. 518-448-5904), the First Church of Christ Scientist (555 Delaware Ave., Delmar, NY 12054), or the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (PO Box 807, Harper's Ferry, WV 25425).

My Dear Rich and Christopher and David,
A mutual friend, Karen Terrell, told me of Kim's passing this past Sunday. I am at a loss for words, but I do want you to know that my heart goes out to you and my love and my prayers are with you. I am so grateful for the time that we were able to spend together last summer in Mt.Vernon, WA. Kim was one of the most loving and happy and energetic woman that I have ever had the priviledge of knowing. I will never for get the first time I met her and you Rich. She had a special surprise for my girls in her purse...Yo Yo's! And it broke the ice and brought smiles to their faces and when she showed them how to use them they were hooked! Her love for all was so apparent and so wonderful and it just embraced us all. I am so grateful to have known her and to know you. If there is anything that I can do please feel free to contact me. My email address is listed below.
I love you all!

Rich, Chris and David, I wanted to express my sorrow over your loss of your Mom and Wife. My memories of Kim are those of laughter and joy. Her laugh was contagious and always put me in a good mood.
The pride she had for you, boys was evident any time you talked to her. She always had a funny story to tell including the embarassing parts which of course made us laugh even more.
My thoughts and prayers are with you .

Dear Rich, David, and Chris:
Your Mom was always a friendly, smiling, happy fan who sat on the sidelines of the baseball field watching you play the game. I always knew that when David was playing, his Mom was close by watching and supporting her son and his team. While Soccer was the favorite of your family, it was our baseball games that I had the opportunity to meet and chat with your Mom. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. We will all miss her, but she will always be forever watching you from the sidelines. Our thoughts are with you.

Your wife/Mom, Kimmer to those of us from her scouting world, was an amazing lady who brought sunshine and caring love wherever she went.

We are so sorry for your family's loss. Kim was an amazing woman whose ready smile, kind heart, and generous spirit enriched our lives on and off the soccer field. She was, in a real way, a part of the boys' team, and that team and its parents will miss her constant support, her warm greetings, and her hearty laugh.

Chris and David, everyone who knew your mother could feel her profound love for you in everything she did and said. You made her proud, and it showed.

Our thoughts are with you all.
