Walter Jerome Obituary

Jerome, Walter Clarke TROY Walter Clarke Jerome, 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 20, 2008 at the Eddy Memorial in Troy, N.Y. surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Atlanta, Ga. on September 30, 1921, the son of the late Marcelle and May Bell (Clarke) Jerome. Walt graduated from the University of Hartford with a bachelor's of fine arts and continued on to get his master's from SUNY Albany. He served five years in the U.S. Army, stationed in the Pacific. He married the greatest love of his life, his wife Joan Sylvia Lovering Jerome, September 1, 1951. Joan predeceased Walt in 2007. After teaching in Maine, Walt settled in Gloversville to continue his career teaching art for 26 years, retiring in 1984. He enjoyed his co-workers and all his students, many of whom continued in art. Walter was an active member of his church, the United Church of Christ in Gloversville. He sang in the church choir and worked on the annual art show. Walter was a volunteer for Meals On Wheels for seniors. He was also a member and officer in the Fulton County Arts Council, NYS Arts Council, Fulmont Visual Arts Guild and Saratoga Arts Council. Walt was a working artist since 1953 with seven one-man art shows, work accepted in many juried competitions, received awards and completed many commercial assignments. Walter loved all forms of the arts including music. He had an extensive collection of great classical and jazz music and played the violin. He was an accomplished golfer with many trophies to his name. He loved skiing, photography and traveling. After retirement, Walt and Jo traveled the country from Maine to Fla., Dallas (to visit his loving sister, Julie Evans) to Calif. and Wash. and up into Canada. They traveled to Europe with great friends the Cloughs and Hogues. Walter is survived by three daughters, Betty Jo (Al) Charette, Andrea (Donald) Mittler and Barbara (Rex) Ford. By seven grandchildren, LeeAnn, Kathryn, Sarah, Andrea, Jack, Johnathan and Thomas; and his sister, Julie Evans of Dallas. He has many nieces and nephews in Dallas, Calif., Conn. and Fla. The family wishes to express their sincere and heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at both Eddy Memorial in Troy and Hawthorne Ridge in East Greenbush for their care and support of Walt. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 25 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 31 East Fulton Street, Gloversville. Walt's family will greet friends in the church lounge from 1-2 p.m. prior the service. Those wishing to remember Walt may make contributions in his name to the First Congregational Church of Christ or charity of your choice. Arrangements are by the Parker Bros. Memorial, Watervliet. Dear Jerome Family:

I am so sorry to hear of Walt's passing and worse that I didn't even know his wife had died. Walt helped me many times and drew processing plant renditions for my Mohawk Fur Dressing business, many years ago now. I thought he was the kindest man and so very smart. I wish he could have stayed with us longer. He will be dearly missed.

My kindest regards,
Arthur Michael Ambrosino

Hi--I have three very precious pictures your dad painted for me over the years as my house on the lake was designed and built. I so wish you could see them. Your dad a mom were wonderful friends and teachers. The pictures will ALWAYS remind me of our special times together.

I am sorry this is late. This is to Walt's children and grandchildren, Jo's too, just to say what wonderful people they always were, the best of the best, how much they were loved and how much they will be missed. They were some of my favorite people in life. They were great conversationalists, interested in all life had to offer and very helpful to inspire others. I was lucky to have them as an aunt and uncle. The family is in our prayers and we will think of you often. Sorry we couldn't make it to the services, but our thoughts were with you that day. Love, Rod, Holly, Juliana and Winston Smart, Brawley CA.

Dear Jerome Family,

I just found out that Mr. Jerome died and I wanted to offer my sympathy to all of you. He was my art teacher in the 60's and tried to encourage me with my art work. I remember a special class he enrolled me in for the summer and I still have art work from that class. I had to choose to continue with either art or music classes in high school because the schedule did not allow for both. Mr. Jerome spent lots of time trying to convince me to choose art over music. It was a difficult chioce but I am now retired from teaching music for 32 years. He was a gentle, encouraging teacher who could always be counted on to be patient and kind as he dealt with students. Needless to say I admired him and was fortunate to have had him as my art teacher.

This goes to the family and friends and his many students over the years..When I read that Mr Jerome had passed my heart kinda sunk to the bottom of my toes. He was one of my favorite teachers in Gloversville back in the 60s. He was the softest spoken man with a huge heart. His talent was passed on or was tried to be passed on to all of us.. I will never forget that towering man that tried to teach us the right way to draw. Please know you all have my sympathy and my prayers. But I'm sure he is showing his great talent in heaven..
God bless you Mr Jerome..

Dear Jerome Family--I was saddened to hear of the passing of Walter. He and your mother were special to me and I have three of the most precious paintings he did hanging proudly in my home. I also had the pleasure of working with your mother for several years at McNab School where she was one of the finest teachers I ever had the pleasure to work with. I realize they are now both in a much "better" place, but my heart still goes out to all of you for your loss of a most wonderful man!!

Barb and family,

My deepest sympathy goes out to all of you and you know how much both of your parents meant to me. We had alot of good times and also fond memories of different saying and talks that we had.Your dad was someone very special and very funny at times. When your dad left Hawthorne we was very sad to see him go. He is now up there with your mom playing the violin and making plans to go crusing to different places where they have been or not been. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. God Bless.

Mr. J's Family, Today as we opened the paper in haste we were saddened to see of your loss. Mr. J as we always referred to him was truly one of the greatest and sincere men we have ever met, he along with your mom were two of the best people someone could ask for as a neighbor. We had the best times with our children as Mr. and Mrs. J lived next door for 12 years always enjoying there company. You and your children are in our thoughts and prayers during this time. Tonight as we broke the news to our kid's we then spent quite sometime remembering the good times that Mr. J and of course Mrs.J gave to us and our children. Brandon never got to see one of his grandfather's and the other died when he was two, so we always thought he looked at Mr. J as a grandfather figure even though he called him Mr. Bijome. May god bless you during this trying time.

Our deepest condolences to all the family. Mr. Jerome will be remembered by me not only as a fine teacher and artist, but also as my first ski racing coach. His gentle encouragement and the respect he gave and held was a testament to a fine man. My mother Mary and he were old friends in art, and I know that she held him in the highest regard as do I.

To all the family my deepest sympathy. Your Dad was my art teacher back in the 60's . He was one of my favorite teachers. There was never a dull moment and always a smile. Mr.Jerome was always boosting one's confidence always making them feel good. One of my fondest memories was when we all had to create some kind of art to be considered for the Fulton County Art Show. I chose to use paper mache. I made a 3 foot tall frog painted him to look like he was wearing a tuxedo, one leg was crossed over the other he had a cane in one hand sort of like vaudeville dancer. Imagine my surprise and delight to have won an entry into the exhibit. Mr.Jerome was so proud of me and froggy. I wanted to keep froggy after the exhibit had ended but he finally convinced me to let him have it and for a long long time froggy sat perched on one of the shelves in his class room for all the world to see. His encouragement and wonderful sense of humor helped many a student at Gloversville High School.
I hope all the wonderful memories will help to get you through your loss.
Sincerely,

Richard Payne

Walter was a most excellent man and art teacher. I can't say enough about his character, personality, integrity and ability.
I spent my high school years in Gloversville with Mr. Jerome as my art teacher. I have never known or had a finer art instructor or teacher. The world is little darker place now that the light of Walter is not here to shine, but his spirit will live on in his students and his great body of work. My sincerest condolences to his family.

I felt deeply sad when I heard your dad passed; as I was also when your mom did. I worked in Hawthorne when they were both there. I am glad to have known them both. Even in those circumstances. I very much enjoyed your dad. We walked often and talked about the art work around the floor. Very sweet man. My deepest sympathay.
