Genia Berkowicz Obituary

Berkowicz, Genia ALBANY Genia Wajntal Berkowicz, age 97, of the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center in Albany, died on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at the nursing center. Genia was born in Warsaw, Poland and resided in Rego Park, N.Y. for most of her life. She had been employed as a sales lady at the former Alexander's Department Store in Queens, N.Y. and worked until the age of 85. She was a member of the Rego Park Jewish Center and also did volunteer work in their gift shop. Genia was honored and was the recipient of the Woman of the Year Award from the Jewish Center for her dedicated work as a volunteer. She was also a Holocaust survivor. She was married to Joseph Berkowicz until his passing in 1994. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Rita Berkowicz and her brother, Mark Wein. Loving aunt of Paul Wein and his wife Debra of Guilderland, N.Y. and Ernie Wein and his wife Deborah of Niskayuna, N.Y. Genia's family would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to Constance Ferrell from Community Hospice of Albany for the care and kindness shown to Genia and her family. Services at the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Queens on Monday, October 15, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in memory of Genia may be made to Community Hospice, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12211.
