Ana Carrigan Obituary

Carrigan, Sister Ana Pauline, CSJ LATHAM Sister Ana Pauline Carrigan, CSJ, 96, died Thursday, October 11, 2007, at St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. Sister Ana had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 76 years. Sister Ana Pauline, the former Alice Marie Carrigan, was born on June 30, 1911, in Binghamton, N.Y., daughter of the late James and Anna Mahoney Carrigan. After attending Binghamton Central High School, Sister Ana entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1931. Sister Ana received a bachelor's degree in Latin and a master's degree in education, both from The College of Saint Rose. For 33 years, Sister Ana taught in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses and then served in the education department at The College of Saint Rose for 12 years. For the last 18 years of Sister Ana's active ministry, she served as librarian at Holy Trinity School in Honolulu, Hawaii. Sister Ana Pauline was a compassionate teacher, an extraordinary mentor, an inspiring colleague and a generous friend. Whether she was reading a story to a young child or supervising a student teacher, Sister Ana was accessible, kind and enthusiastic. As a Sister of St. Joseph, she was ever conscious of being a unifying and reconciling presence wherever she was. Sister Ana Pauline is survived by a niece and several cousins in Calif., Pa. and N.Y., by many friends, and by the Sisters of St. Joseph, with special mention of Sister Margaret Mary Edic. In addition to her parents, Sister Ana was predeceased by her brother, Robert, and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Ana Pauline was a participant in the Anatomical Gift Program at Albany Medical College and donated her remains for medical education and research. Sister Ana's memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 15, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. A prayer service honoring Sister Ana's life will be held at St. Joseph's Provincial House on Sunday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. Contributions in Sister Ana's memory may be made to the Development Office of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham, NY 12110.
