Emerson VanPatten Obituary

VanPatten, Emerson Jr. ALTAMONT Emerson VanPatten Jr., 89, died suddenly on Monday, October 15, 2007 at his childhood home. Born on August 14, 1918, Emerson is survived by his devoted, loving wife of 61 years Elizabeth (Ivers) Van Patten; his children, Linda (Lee) Sornberger, Emerson Van Patten III, Jeffrey Van Patten, Jill Van Patten, Jan (Gail) Van Patten, Christopher (Carlene) Van Patten, Lisa (Patrick) Clark all of the Capital District area. Emerson is also survived by his ten grandchildren Kelly, Kacey, Brandon, Kourtney, Korinne, Kyle, Carlie, Erin, Caitlin, and Jack; and two great-grandchildren, Owen and Aidan as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws. Emerson was the son of Emerson and Mabel (Horner) Van Patten and very dear brother to Ruth Lawlor and Olive Van Patten, who both predeceased him. Emerson, known as "Van" by many friends and business associates, attended Draper High School and served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Emerson and Elizabeth met while both were serving in the U.S. Army while stationed in San Francisco and were married in May 1946 at Reno, Nev. Upon their honorable discharge from the service, they settled at the Van Patten home on Western Turnpike. Van then pursued a career in the automobile business that spanned over 50 years and upon his retirement remained active in the business with two of his sons. Van also developed a passion for raising Shetland ponies, which he and his children showed at many of the region's annual fairs. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, at the Fredendall Funeral Home, Alta-mont. Calling hours are Wednesday, October 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial is in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Guilderland. Donations in Emerson's name may be made to the Regional Food Bank, 956 Albany Shaker Rd, Latham, NY 12110.

Dear Betty and Family, I was so saddened to learn of Van's passing, yesterday morning. He would want us to look back with a smile and to look forward with joy, his newest grand child will help us with this endeavor. We will all have such fabulous memories of a kind and gentle man. I will always remember him answering the phone and telling you that "Clara" had called, and I always assured him that he could call me anything he wanted to. See you all soon, much love and deepest sympathy. Love, Claire

I hope you will remember our father as we do, as a loving devoted husband and father. As a man who loved to be surrounded by his family and friends. He was a man of few words who often let you know how he felt and thought with a smile, a wink or with the touch of his hand. If you are friends of the family, I hope you will call, write or stop by to see mom and help her through this very difficult time. God bless you and your loved ones.
