Zenovia Szanc-Smarsh Obituary

Szanc-Smarsh, Zenovia RESTON, Va. Zenovia Szanc-Smarsh, 61, of Reston, Va. and formerly of Toronto, Canada and Cohoes N.Y., died Saturday, November 24, 2007 at the Capital Hospice in Arlington, Va., embraced by her loving family. Born in Dilingen, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Konon and Ewhenia Habal Szanc and beloved wife of John T. Smarsh of Reston. Zenovia was a resident of Canada for 28 years and most recently lived in Reston for almost three years. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in Russian Language from SUNY Albany and also a master's degree in library science from the University of Toronto. Zenovia was a teacher and librarian and was a former communicant of Sts. Peter & Paul's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Cohoes. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her loving daughter, Larysa and her husband Danylo Popadynec of Astoria, N.Y.; brother, Dr. Bohdan P. Szanc and his wife Robin; niece Sarah Szanc of Vero Beach, Fla.; and godchildren, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by an aunt, uncle, and cousins in Ukraine and cherished friends in Canada and the United States. Funeral from the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes on Friday morning at 10 o'clock; Mass of Christian Burial to follow at Sts. Peter & Paul's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Cohoes at 10:30 a.m. Interment in Sts. Peter & Paul's Ukrainian Cemetery, Waterford, N.Y. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. A Panakhyda service will be held Thursday at 6 o'clock at the funeral home. Contributions in Zenovia's memory may be made to Capital Hospice-Halquist Memorial Center, 6565 Arlington Blvd., Falls Church, VA 22042; PLAST Toronto, 2199 Bloor St. West, Toronto, ON M6S 1N2; or Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 198 Ontario Street Cohoes, NY 12047.
