Mable Schlieman Obituary

Schlieman, Mable S. SCHENECTADY Mable S. Schlieman, 74, of Schenectady, died December 4, 2007 at St. Peter's Hospital. Born in Governeur, N.Y. on December 12, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Theron and Edith Storie. She earned her bachelor's degree from State University Teacher's College, Potsdam, and a master's degree in speech and drama from Teacher's College, Columbia University. She was an elementary school teacher in Ballston Spa and Niskayuna Schools from 1955- 1964. In 1977 she became a driver and caseworker for Schenectady County Nutrition Program for the Elderly, Catholic Family and Community Services. From 1980 to 1997, she was the Schenectady County Meals On Wheels coordinator. From 1973-2006, she held the title of educational associate at Niskayuna Reformed Church where she served as director of Christian education. Other educational activities included teaching tutor, program consultant for the Synod of Albany, Reformed Church in America; TV Awareness trainer, Birchwood School pre-school story leader, Friendship Program teacher of religious education for retarded adults. Her activities at Niskayuna Reformed Church included women's ministries, Stephen ministry trainer, deacon, and church librarian. In the community, she was a member of AAUW, chairperson of a theater interest group, officer of Birchwood Parent Teacher Organization, and volunteer at Haven. She was always interested in theater and traveling. Mable is survived by her husband, Robert F. Schlieman, whom she married in 1976; her sons, Alan (Cindy) Miller, Kenneth (Marie) Miller; her daughter, Terri (LeRoy) Wyman, her sons, John (Estely) Schlieman, and Robert (Claudia) Schlieman Jr; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson; and two nieces; and her former husband, Donald B. Miller. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Niskayuna Reformed Church, 3041 Troy-Schenectady Rd. Interment will be in Niskayuna Reformed Church Cemetery. A calling hour will precede the service from 6-7 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Niskayuna Reformed Church Building Fund or to Haven, 703 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12305. Arrangements are entrusted to The Griswold Funeral Home.

Please accept our condolences on your loss. Mabel was an incredible woman, who inspired many children and adults. We Sunday School teachers always said that you could never say "no' to Mabel...her enthusiasm and dedication were contagious! She will be deeply missed by many.
