Andrew Wilkinson Obituary

Wilkinson, Andrew H. MSGT, USAF (Ret.) ALBANY Prominent veterans' activist Andrew H. "Woopy Doodle" Wilkinson, 74, died at home on August 11, 2007. Andy was born in Albany on April 13, 1933 to Perry and Clara Wilkinson, both deceased. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years, retiring as a master sergeant after 19 base assignments and 13 years overseas. During 1966-67, he served in Vietnam with the 1876th Communications Squadron at Tan Son Nhut Airbase. He was a founding member (1982), past board member, and life member of Tri County Council Vietnam Era Veterans, chairing its Hospital Oversight and Agent Orange/Dioxin committees. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 10, life member of Oppenheim VFW Post 1019, and a member of Scully American Legion Post 1019. Andy was an organizer of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Petition Committee, comprised of officials of traditional veterans organizations. In April 1986, after a year of intense negotiations, a 28-day inpatient PTSD program was finally established at the Stratton VA Medical Center. In 1987, he co-founded the International Agent Orange Network with Joe Cole of Lacey, Wash. The network was comprised of military veterans from the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand, U.S. government and U.S. and international scientists, lawyers, and civilian activists. Their efforts helped to connect many diseases, including Spina-Bifida in infants, to Agent Orange/Dioxin exposure. He is survived by his loving nieces and goddaughters, Mary Emma (Robert) Townsend, Jennifer Norris (and son, Landon), and Pamela Jean Townsend, all of Glenville, N.Y.; lifetime friends, William and Laura Teasdale formerly of Albany now of Temple, Ga., and their sons and families, Timothy, Gregory (Mary), Douglas (Kathy), Robert (Katy) of N.J. and William of Calif; and dear friends since military service in Athens, Greece in 1972, Gerald L. and Claude Randels of Alexandria, Va. Also Sedar Tuygun and Natalie, with children Toma and Lavi of Texas. Funeral services will be held Friday, 11 a.m. at the Tebbutt & Frederick Memorial Home, 633 Central Avenue, Albany. Relatives and friends are also invited to call Thursday 5 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in the Gerald B.H Solomon National Cemetery, Schuylerville, N.Y. Donations may be made to Tri County Council Vietnam Era Veterans, P.O. Box 11100, Albany, NY 12211 or to the POW/MIA F0IA Litigation Account, P.O. Box 8044, Silver Springs, MD 20907.

dear uncle andy,

I wanted to write something more to make you feel more comforted on your journey to heaven. I was listening to the song good nigh saigon by billy joel and all the vets sing together and we would all go down together! So if it helps you will enter the gates of heaven with all your brothers. God would never let you enter them alone. Even though there is neve a positive answer for war we all feel the pain of man kind and we question why we have to do what we have to do. we should all learn to love each other. And for some reason we are all afraid to love our brother sometimes.

Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to meet "Uncle Andy" but I always heard such great things about him from Jenn, so i felt as if I knew him in a way. He sounded like such a sweet, caring and understanding man with a sense of humor everyone would chuckle at. He made such an incredible impact on my dear friend Jennifer's life, for that I will be forever grateful. He will be missed by those who loved him and those who's lives he touched.

Andy will be missed by all.He was quiet but when he spoke he was knew what he was talking about. He cared about people, especially veterans. The plight of POW/MIA's is what I will remember most of him and his compassion.Tri County and the Albany Veteran community has lost a true leader. Semper Fi, Andy!

Wilkie was my roomie when we were with the 1876th Comm Sq at Tan Son Nhut Air base in Vietnam from Feb 1966 to Feb 1967. We were both shift supervisors in the Teletype/Crypto maintenance shop. We made contact again about five years ago and continued our friendship and shared information on disabilities caused by Agent Orange and PTSD. I was shocked by his passing and will miss my friend very much. I thank his goddaughter for informing me of Wilkie's passing. I wish I could pay my respects in person, but I am so far away in San Angelo, Texas. However please be assured I am there in spirit and am sure Wilkie is at peace now and probably sharing some war story with God.

I remember Andy from the Tri-County Veterans meetings. My dad Al, used to take my sister and brother and I to the meetings with him. Andy was always so nice to us. We were just speaking of him with my dad about a week or two ago. He was a wonderful man and will be missed by many.

I am not even sure where to begin except to say that the world has lost such a great loving and caring man. Uncle Andy I never thought of what life would be like without you in it, and here I sit knowing that I will never see your smiling face, or feel your arms wrapped around me or hearing you say woopy doodle. You were loved oh so much and I just wish that Landon was able to grow up with you and spend more time with you. But alas God knew it was your time, and so you are in heaven with him now looking down on us.

I love you forever Uncle Andy as you will always have a piece of my heart.
Love
Goddaughter #2
