Walter was a larger-than-life type of person that movies are usually made about and one is considered quite fortunate to meet and very fortunate to get to know. I consider myself very fortunate to have gotten to know Walter and will always treasure the experiences and memories. Railroading just isn't the same without him. Rest in peace, Walter.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Rich's passing. I only met him once or twice, but he had a great impact on my life. As a former employee of the Delaware & Huson Railway, his efforts were instrumental in retaining my job and the livelihoods of thousands of families in the Northeast US. It is impossible to tell what the fate of the railroad industry in this region would have been without his efforts and support. Though railroading has been my life and livelihood, it was only part of Mr. Rich's. The influence he and his family have had in the Cooperstown area will remain apparent for many years to come.

My wife and I wish to convey our deepest sympathy to his wife and family. His legacy is yet to be realized.

Walter was my Godfather and he was truly an amazing man. His warm heart, compassion, and of course his "witty" sense of humor will be greatly missed. Walter gave me the greatest gift he could ever give, he gave me my "Family # 2" -Karine, Steph, and Derik. Walter formed what is now known to me as a loving and unbreakable bond between us all. I will forever cherish my memories of Walter and continue to make new ones with the family that Walter has graced me with. Thank you ever so much Uncle Walter. I will love you and miss you always.

For over 20 years I worked with and learned from Walter as my firm, Ernst & Young, served his company. While always involved in some aspect of business, Walter also found time to understnad and learn about the people with whom he worked. He was a leader in his industry, a great business person and a friend to many. He will be missed by the railroad industry and general business throughout New York & New Jersey. My deepest sympathies to Karine and all of his family.
