Jack Looney Obituary

Jack R. Looney Retired US Army, Col. The Col. passed away May 9, 2008. He was born January 12, 1917 in Oklahoma. He spent his youth in New Mexico until entering United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated class of '39 and was soon immersed in World War II as an Infantry Officer with the 341st Regiment. He commanded units and saw action in the Aleutian Islands and Europe, as well as participating in the liberation of the Philippines. He was awarded both the Silver Star and The Bronze Star for gallantry in action. These were the first of many awards, commendations and letters of appreciation he received throughout his career in the army. In addition to the above awards, he also received the Legion of Merit, Joint Service Commendation and Army Commendation medals. The majority of his service was overseas and following the war, he married a beautiful Filipina with whom he was married for 69 years until her death in January, 2008. After a 30 year military career, he retired in Albuquerque, NM with the rank of colonel. His work did not end there however. He created and managed a laboratory with Caterpillar Tractors for the next 10 years. He enjoyed his retirement for a number of years in Rio Rancho, NM hunting and playing golf, before coming to live with his daughter in Tucson five years ago. He will be remembered for so many admirable and loving qualities. He was an exemplary man and a great role model for all of us. He is survived by his four children, John, Robert (Gloria), Tony (Angela), Anita Sanguineti (Alejandro); his six grandchildren, Robert (Lupe), Teresa (Steve) Gabriela, Daniel, John-Karl and Megan; and two great-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Gillian. Visitation and Rosary (7:00 p.m.) will be held Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY (Center Chapel) 240 S. Stone Av. Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Thursday, May 15, 2008, 9:30 a.m. at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on 1436 N. Campbell Av. Interment with military honor guard will take place in Santa Fe, NM. Arrangements by CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, INC.

Col. Looney,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your years of dedicated service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the U.S. Army-especially during WW II. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
