Char Fontane Obituary

Char Fontane (Kaci to her longtime friends) passed from this world in Atlanta, Ga., on April Fool's Day 2007, her last jest to mankind.

She was predeceased by her father, Tony Fontane, an R.C.A. Victor religious recording artist, in 1973; and by her mother, Kerry, a Universal Studios starlet, in 1996.

She is survived by her only loving son, Shaun Fontane, and by her devoted husband, Roy Yeager (former drummer with the Atlanta Rhythm Section).

Kaci was a consummate actress and comedian. She possessed a truly beautiful voice, which she came by honestly, being the daughter of Tony Fontane. Her credits included the role of Marty in the Broadway show "Grease," a starring role in the television miniseries "Pearl," her own Los Angeles-based television sitcom, "Joe and Valerie," and various other television and movie productions where she played opposite many movie and television greats. But her main love was music and particularly vocals. She was associated with several faith-based ministries and could sing a spiritual with the true power of a believer. She fought a brave battle with breast cancer and kept it at bay for several years, but in the end she succumbed to the insidious disease. We will all miss her vivacious and funny personality, her biting wit and comedic genius, and of course, her captivating voice. Truly today there is a new star in the heavens and unfortunately for us, heaven's gain is our great loss.

I just found out about Char's death and I am shocked. We were wonderful friends in high school, and I traveled with Char and her mom and dad to Europe when we were 18. Talk about adventures and funny stories! It is a time I will never forget.
Reading about her faith and commitment to Jesus warms my heart. What a great inspiration for everyone who knew her.

I was very sad to hear of Char's passing. While we never were able, Roy mentioned how he was so looking forward to when I would get to meet you. I am well confident though that some day we shall indeed meet. My prayers are with you and Roy and your son. God Bless you all and may God grant you Char peace and lots of love.

God Bless you.

"char-ru" was my "sister"!

Our friendship spanned thirteen remarkable years!

My friend passed with the gentle grace and kindness of a beloved older sister. (Char was two months older)

To the end we giggled of our delight, as sisters, to sit at God's feet . . .one of us blond-haired, blue-eyed the other brown hair, brown eyes and God would know which one of us was which!!

She rewrote our histories to include each of us in the other's story.

Her creative picture books chronicle our shared journey into middle-age.

We promised each other safe-haven from life's storms, passing youth and "things that went bump in the night".

As I write and share my love for my "Char-ru" I tell each of you touched by Char's incredible spirit she passed with her true essence and beauty as a beautiful example of one of God's special gifts to all of us who remain behind.

I will remind her of that when we are reunited.

She made me promise to "hear" her when she spoke to me next!

I'm listening . . .

I love you, Char-ru!

Roy and Shaun, I am so sorry for your loss.

Char was such a good friend to me. I had moved to Tennessee in 1998 to open a business, and Char was one of the first people I really came to know in Murfreesboro. She told me an amazing story of how God had healed her from stomach complications and how she should have died, but He spared her life. I'm glad He did and I got a chance to know her better. He walked with her through Breast Cancer and her Bone Cancer too.

I loved her like a sister and we sometimes talked for hours on the phone about politics, spiritual matters, and Christ's second coming. We both believed He would return in our lifetime. She got to see him first.

I am so glad I will see her again in Heaven. I know she will be "waiting on the far side banks of Jordan." I miss her a lot. I know we all do.

I loved my Mother with everything I had. I want to thank all of the loving responses here. It has been quite difficult, but I know as many have said here that she is indeed in Heaven, showing her wit to all of the angels. I could not have grown up with or chosen a better Mother. She was beautiful inside and out, loving, kind, sharp as anybody I have ever known and still know. Most importantly, someone that loved Jesus and wasn't afraid or ashamed to show that to anyone. I can only hope to find a lady that exemplifies all of the above, though that is a tall order.

I miss her a great deal and am happy to know she is out of pain and in the RIGHT place.

I love you Mother.

Dear Charae,

I wonder how many times I have gone over all the beautiful and cherished childhood memories we shared as children. I knew you as Charae and what now seems like a lifetime ago. You were three years old and I was four.

When I finally received word of your passing I was overwhelmed with grief and sorrow. You see even though our lives took such different directions and you were usually so very far away from me, you were always with me in my heart. You were here when I married, you were here when my beautiful daughter Shannon Christine was born, and every Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. When I lost my Dad and then not so long ago Rhonda my sister, you were there with me if only in my heart. You will always be that happy, beautiful dark haired little girl that I shared my childhood with and later all our dreams and ambitions as young teenage girls. Your parents were my parents and mine Visa Versa with you. I remember being with you at your house and you with me..That was just the way it was.

In a very special way I think I will always think of you as still being there, full of life, Vigor and wearing that beautiful Signature smile you always seemed to have on your face.

Charae, you will always be here in my heart as you have always been. I will keep you here with me until the day comes when I hope we will all meet once again in our Fathers house. Until then I will just say, "See you later Char", you were my friend and I love you......

I too have cherished memories of Char, as she was known here in Atlanta. I also had the honor of spending a lot of time with her during her last five months with us. Although my heart is broken, she left me with an amazing gift and I am forever indebted. She truly inspired me to live a better life through my actions each day. I look forward to the day we meet again, as she brought such joy to me and my family.

To Shaun: your Mother talked of her wishes of seeing your wedding and your children. Now she'll just watch from Heaven. She loved you very much.

To Roy: Char asked me to tell you often that you were "the love of her life."

We love you Roy.

Although most of our adult lives were spent living so far away from one another we often talked about the many childhood memories we shared. I will treasure these memories forever and always remember the special bond we shared throughout the years. She will be forever remembered and loved by me, and I am sure by all those who loved her too.

The Fontanes were dear friends of our family for over forty years. We spent many a happy time with them at their place or in their company. Kaci and her parents were wonderful talented people who it was our great honour to call friends. I remember the various gigs that Kaci, Mark, Jim amd my brother Jack played as "Kaci and the Undertakers". They really had a sound and Kaci's voice was fantastic. Once when they were practicing at our home in Thousand Oaks, we came upon a letter from an anonymous neighbour that had been left on our doorstep. It read "More vocals please!" Those were happy days. The Christmas dinner we spent with the Fontanes at their home in Woodland Hills was especially memorable. Kaci's mother Kerry, who was the epitome of beauty and grace was mashing potatoes (something I have a feeling, she didn't do too often) and she came to the table with her beautiful diamond dome ring completely covered in potatoes. It was quite hilarious!
I remember seeing Kaci's budding talent as a musical actress first hand when she played the part of Annie Oakley in Annie Get your Gun. It was Woodland High School's senior play that year. Her voice carried throughout the gym without the need of a microphone. Everyone present was suitably impressed. I also remember her singing a solo ("He") at our church when she was fourteen and later my girlfriend who also had a wonderful voice told me she herself would never sing that song again.
In later years Kaci's career took her to various places around the world. She didn't enjoy flying, so whenever possible she went by land or sea. When she was filming in England she, Shaun, her mother and her then husband Robert Mitchell sailed on the QEII both ways.
I have retrieved some pictures from the various albums here at home and will be posting them in the photos section of this guest book soon.
We will all miss Kaci terribly and we extend our deepest sympathies to Roy and Shaun at this sad time

Char', "Kaci" as she was better known to me, was a very beautiful and special young woman who has always been near and dear to my heart. Her mother, Kerry, was my best friend, world travelling companion, and confidante, and so it is that Kaci was "family" to me and my three children, Bob, Lori and Jack.
She was multi-gifted as exemplified by her beautiful voice lifted in song, and her comedic style, as well as her acting talent. When she sang "My Funny Valentine", ( my personal favorite ), it would bring tears to my eyes.
I was always so proud to see her perform on stage, and to have heard her sing in Grease when she played on Broadway in New York City. This event was a memorable one for me as Kerry and I were invited backstage to meet the cast after the performance. I also enjoyed visiting Kaci on the L.A. set when she was playing in the television sitcom Joe and Valerie. Her characterization of Valerie was humorous, and engaging, and she had such a natural talent for comedy.
A couple of years ago, I had the good fortune to be able to spend a beautiful Thanksgiving with Kaci, and Roy at their Plantation home in Murfreesboro, TN. Spending time visiting with Kaci, Roy, and Kaci's handsome son, Shaun, is a heart-warming memory for me as it is with so many other memories created throughout the years that involved the Fontane family.
It is difficult for me to comprehend that Kaci is lost to us, and that I will not see her smiling face nor hear her joyful laughter, nor listen to her magnificant voice again. She will always be loved, and will be sorrowfully missed by me and my family, and though her passing is difficult to accept, I know that she is still smiling, still laughing and still singing with the Heavenly Hosts.

Char' (Kaci), and I had an abiding, cherished, and lifelong friendship that spanned more than 43 years. She was a bridesmaid at my wedding and I was hers when she married Roy in Nashville, TN. I valued her not only as a kindred spirit but for the hopeful, witty, and consummate person she was.
Kaci's life took her in many interesting directions. Though a California girl at heart, she travelled the world having lived in Italy, England, Australia, then on to New York City, Nashville, Tn. and Atlanta, GA. With each new experience she had tales to tell, and with great humor and hilarity she did just that. There was never a time when we were together, or when speaking on the phone from distances near or far that she didn't have me in side-splitting hysterical laughter. Even when she was in intense pain, and nearing her final days she didn't cease to be amusing. Less than a month before her earthly demise, when last we spoke, her final words to me left me with tears in my eyes, but put a smile on my face. Her kindness of heart, generosity of spirit, and her witty disposition was infectious and will never be forgotten. Like a day without sunshine or rain without a rainbow, she will be profoundly missed.
Kaci didn't fear dying... for solid was her faith. She delighted in the Lord and never failed to speak of Him to me. Though she knew that her final days were nearing, she acknowledged with an open heart that God was the source of all of her blessings. At death, my endearing friend, Char', didn't leave home-she went home...and the Glory of Heaven is hers!

I met Kaci in 1963. A lifetime ago. We went to the "Sweethearts Ball" together, and a sweetheart she was to all who knew her. I remember with fondness the fun times I had being the drummer in her rock band, KACI AND THE UNDERTAKERS. We performed in many venues such as the Hollywood Paladium at the Battle of the Bands to mention just one. What an incredibly powerful, beautiful, and dynamic voice she had. When she sang, everyone listened.
I trust that Kaci is still singing, and that her audience continues to enjoy her sweetheart appeal and her awesome talent, as I did back then.
She will be greatly missed.

There are no words to express how very sorry and saddened to hear of Char's passing. My Mom (Aunt Helen). son Joshua and I surprised Char when we attended your wedding in Nashville. We had a wonderful time. I know how happy you both were and loved watching you jamming with the band at the reception. It was one of the last times I also spent with Kerry. Our love and prayers are with both you and Shaun.

I was shocked and saddened to read that Char'ae had passed away. She was my second cousin, her mother Kerry was my cousin. OUr entire family in California, Ohio and Arizona had no idea Char was even ill. Plese give my love to Shaun, it has been several years since he has been with the family. All of our children in the family attended West Vallley Christian School with Shaun. I remember Char as a little girl playing with my brother Jack, they were very close in age. One of my fondest memories is Char hoppng down her driveway in Woodland Hills dressed as an Easter bunny for the Easter party she had for all the children in the family.
Words cannot express our sorrow. I only wish I had known so I could have called her. Please let us know if there is going to be a service in California at any time.
Char's grandmother Charlotte and my mother were sisters.I personally have never met you Roy, but my Mom, sister and nephew attended your wedding in Nashville.
You and Shaun have our deepest sympathy, I am so sorry.

With love

I was shocked and saddened seeing Char's picture and story. It was truly a flash from the past. During the late 50's early 60's I was her neighbor and closest playmate on Kelvin St. in Canoga Park Ca. I will never forget spending so much time at her house with it's white carpeting, beautiful piano and all the large black and white photos of Tony and Kerry everywhere. Char and I were inseperable then. We spent hours playing Barbie's. And our greatest adventure was paddeling up and down the sidewalk in her "Surry" with the fringe ontop. We of course lost touch as young playmates often do,but I will never forget those wonderful childhood summer days and my friend Char.
