WAGONHURST Col (Ret.) ARLAND HERTZOG (Wag) WAGONHURST Col (Ret) Arland Hertzog (Wag) Wagonhurst, age 87, went to be with his Lord on October 30, 2009. He was born June 9, 1922 in Eshbach, Berks Co. to Dr. Harry Daniel Wagonhurst and his wife, Anna Hertzog Wagonhurst. He graduated from The Hill School, Pottstown, attended Penn State University and entered the US Military Academy at West Point, NY in 1942, graduating in 1945. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry. After serving in the Philippines with the US Invasion Units, he deployed to Japan and spent several years with the occupational forces. In 1950 he was sent to Korea where he spent a year and a half fighting in the Korean Conflict, enduring two winters and fighting up to the Yalu River and back down the Peninsula. Years later he commanded a US Infantry Battalion at the DMZ, for one year. He served as Aide de Camp to the US Commander in Chief, European Forces in Germany; with the 3rd Infantry Regiment (Honor Guard) Fort Myer, VA; as a Brigade Commander at Ft. Riley, KS; and in the Republic of Viet Nam. In addition to receiving Masters Degrees at the Army War College and Georgetown University, he served on the staff and faculty of the Command & General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, and served four years on the faculty of the US Army War College in Carlisle. When he retired from the War College, he and his wife of 51 years, Mary Margaret (Peggy) Handley Wagonhurst, decided to stay in the Carlisle area. He worked for Blue Shield in Camp Hill for 14 years before finally retiring; however, his commitment to his community did not stop then. He served 14 years on the Carlisle Area School Board and several years on the Tri-Co. Intermediate Unit Board, serving as Carlisle''s representative. He was president of the IU Board for two years. During his time with the school board, the renovations were made to the High School and the new Bellaire School was built. He was very proud of these accomplishments. A member of Allison United Methodist Church, he was active in the Men''s Group and other activities. More recently, he was a member of the Sertoma Club''s Men''s Cancer Support Group. In both high school and college, he was pitcher for the varsity baseball teams, and later coached the Army baseball team. He was an avid hunter and fisherman all his life. He is survived by his second wife, D''Arcy Charney Wagonhurst; a son, Col (Ret) Jeffrey Wagonhurst and his family, wife, Susan and three grandchildren, Gretchen, Jeffrey, Jr., and Nicholas and one great grandchild, Lila Hintz; his daughter, Dianne Monza and her husband, Vincent; daughter, Carole Wagonhurst, formerly of Carlisle; and two step children, Douglas Charney and Christine Cook. Preceded in death by his first wife Mary Margaret "Peggy" Wagonhurst There will be a celebration of Arland''s life at Allison United Methodist Church, 99 Mooreland Ave., Carlisle on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Maurer and Rev. Dr. Paul Herring officiating. His body will be privately interred at Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. A reception will follow the service in the church social hall.
