Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Cornell W. Gilmore US Army Command Sergeant Major.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.
We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,

Gil,
You had such a wonderful impact on my life, I was always amazed at the display of peace you demonstrated no matter what was going on around you. Being the Christian I am today I now understand that you can only get that type of Peace when the love of Jesus resides in your heart. In everything I saw you do was with such joy and with that infectious smile. Thank you Gil for what you knowingly and unknowingly did for everyone you came in contact with and Thank you for your Service and Sacrifice. I will never forget you.

I met Brother Gilmore after he had gone home to Jesus in a most wondrous way. As a volunteer for the TAPS bereavement care program in Washington, DC, I was asked to run in the Marine Corps 5K and to carry a photo of a "fallen" hero. I gladly accepted the first name they assigned me and when the TAPS director spoke his name, I "saw" Cornell's face in my mind. When his photo arrived by mail, it was only confirmation of an extended Family connection. I proudly ran the 5K holding up Cornell's picture for all to admire...around the Pentagon and up the Interstate, over to Arlington...crowds applauded as their RISEN (not fallen) hero passed by. Several days later, I shared this blessing with my precious minister friend. Imagine the "God moment" when she said, "Wait, I know that man!" Yes, my friend across the miles and years was also Cornell and Donna's friend from Hawaii: the Reverend Doctor Viola Swint! It is truly amazing to see how the Lord Jesus links together in bonds of loving care all His Children. I am grateful for such a fine gentlemen as Cornell and his ultimate gift to our nation and His Savior. I look forward to the day when the Family Circle is united around the Throne and we can all rejoice together. Thank you, Mrs. Gilmore, for sharing your beloved husband with this world.

I was stationed in Hawaii when I met S.M.G. and Mrs. Gilmore he an his wife showed me so much love and concern. They encouraged me to continue to Preach even when it was not popular for women to do so. They supported me when I spoke by bringing the choir they sang with. I was invited to speak at the Base Chapel for both services and Women's Retreats. So I say to Mrs. Gilmore and the children thank you for teaching me the true meaning of what it is to be a Genuine Christian and I thank your Husband and Dad for leading a a Godly life before his family. I was about 12, 13 when i met Minster Gilmore at Grace chapel, i remember being in choir rehearsal, him playing the piano trying to get folks ready to sang lol..I also remember his daughter Dawnita and her kind spirit i really looked up to her becuase she was such a good role model to us younger kids, not acting better because she was an upper classmen..I remember the love of God from this entire family...Then whilst in church one Sunday they made an annoucement that God had called him home..I was shocked and thought about the fact Dawnita and Cornell had lost their father and Sister Gilmore had lost her husband, i empathized even at a young age i could feel their pain..The church sung one of his favorite songs "I'm going up yonder" It was a heartbreaking tune as many in the church sang thru tears..Although its been 10 years since my brethren entered into the presence of GOD he has not been forgotten in our hearts nor our memories..And the passing of time does not erase the impact that this man has had on the lives of many...To his family I pray GOD'S Love, Peace, And Blessings upon your lives..What is sweeter than life but the presence of GOD...Selah...

Although I was angry with you for deploying me to Somalia and deploying me AGAIN to Bosnia...I know I was a better soldier for it and I am a better person for it. I've been retired now for 6 years and most of my Army memories have thankfully faded, but one that never has nor never will fade is my memory of you. I was awe-struck by the manner in which you treated people, making each of us feel important and needed, and I never found a better leader than you. You were larger than life, and you continue to live on in the legacy you passed to each of us privileged enough to have known you and served under you. You continue to be one of my heroes to this day. You truly are missed, my old friend.

Hun, today is November 7, 2010 and it has been 7 years since I have held you in my arms. Family and friends still contact me to tell me how much they miss you. You have left such an indelible mark on so many people my love and I know that God was well pleased with your service down here. I miss you and as I look at our beautiful grandchild, I smile and think how much you would enjoy this bundle of joy that bears your name. Yes, I love you more today than yesterday, but not as much as tomorrow so as long as my love continues to grow, you will always be with me. SHMILY

In memory of Cornell Gilmore
It has been said
To ” fight the good fight”
But is it right
That your widow’s
crying in the night
and your children denied
forever the sight
of your beautiful smile?
For a while
It seemed out of style
To say war is wrong
But you’re still gone
From our life.
This poem is for your wife.
We honor your tremendous sacrifice.
In the sunlight
We feel your warmth
And know your fight
Was not in vain
Yet we still feel the pain
Of missing you;
So this is a poem for you
For all the things you did and didn’t do.
This poem says goodbye
Our tears are finally dry,
But when the day is new
I feel you in the dew
Hear your laughter
In the echo of the birds.
It may seem absurd,
But I sense you everywhere.
We feel how much you cared
So this is a poem for me;
Though war brings misery
I can finally see
This was your destiny.

Every Memorial Day and throughout the year my family and I think of you fondly. We appreciate the sacrifice you and your family have made for our nation. What I remember most is your service. Mrs. Gilmore and Family,
Over ten years have passed since your family opened your home to me as the little girl waiting to go to softball practice in Germany. I am not sure if you remember me or my family, or the days you let Dawnita and I raid the freezer for an afternoon snack, but I wanted to let you know that I do. The generosity that you showed me during that time in my life has served as a moral guide as poignant as any other, and I have sought to pay that generosity forward in everything that I do.
My main purpose in writing today was to express to you that just like the many people that have written on this wall in the past six years, your husband has stayed with me. In 2006 I was commissioned as an officer in the Army. Volunteering at Ft. Huachuca during a Triathalon, standing at a remote water station with one other student, we found that we were both connected by SGM Gilmore and got to talk about his impact on both of our lives. On the day I commissioned, I had his picture in my pocket and it has stayed there through the last three years at Ft Campbell and in Iraq. He is sorely missed, but I wanted to let you know that his memory lives on in the many people that he touched within our community.
Thank you for everything that you have done for me, and I hope that this letter finds you and your family well.

Greetings! You continue to inspire us to this day, and your legacy is all the love, leadership, and humanity you brought to all of us fortunate enough to have been blessed with your company. It's been six years, and it's obvious that you will never be forgotten, will always be missed, and will continue to inspire us to be better people thanks to the sterling example you set for us while among us. My love, tomorrow will be 6 years and in so many ways it seems like it was just yesterday. I know that you are just a prayer and a thought away, but I sure do miss you in the flesh and while I know that as much as I love you, God loves you best, and He saw fit to take you home. You would be pleased with the new addition to our family and I know you would be grinning ear to ear as the youngest Gilmore, your namesake, grows in God's love and favor. I know while you are not here with me, you are forever in my heart. There is not a day that goes by when I don't think of you and long for another conversation, another smile, another touch from you. I love you my love and you will forever be my one true love.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I had a lot of bosses in the Army over the course of a 21 year career, but one Man stands out as the consummate leader; Sergeant Major Gilmore. He had a way of motivating us into attempting the impossible, a way of making the worst of times seem bearable, a charisma that could light up any room, and a friendliness that I've never seen before or since in the military. When we lost him, many of us didn't just lose our leader; we lost a friend, our mentor, a father figure, a shining example to emulate. I always considered him before dealing with my soldiers after having grown up under his leadership, and I was a better leader for it. It's comforting to know that when it's my time, be it tonight, next year, in 30 years, I'll go with confidence knowing God has recruited the very best, and Cornell continues to serve in a greater Army I hope to one day join. And when that threshold is crossed, I fully expect to see the biggest smile in the world, and a booming “GREETINGS” coming from the other side. I miss you, Sergeant Major. My brother Mike just joined your ranks in April; please take great care of him…

Hey Gil,
It's your little Brother Sean. I know that I have not talked to you in a while but as you know a lot is going on. I got up this morning thinking of you. I know that you are watching over me and that you see the good and the bad. I really miss talking to you and getting your advise on things. I still answer the phone with your "Greetings" and the other day when I called my sister (Donna) she got quiet and said that it reminded her of you. The boys still get together sometimes but we kinda have this unwritten rule not to speak of you. I think we miss you so much that it's still hard to talk about. I just wanted to thank you again for not just being my Brother-in-law, but my big brother I never had. I miss you and I'll talk to you later on. Your little brother, Sean

I met Sergeant Major Gilmore in Hawaii while he was the director for the Schofield Barracks Gospel choir. He and his wife Donna supported me as I ministered there often he brought the choir wherever I preached in an effort to be a blessing to the people I ministered to but more so to be an encouragement to me. He was known for his smile that shown with the love of God everywhere he went. Brother Cornell Gilmore was by no means a Sunday Christian. His love for God, his family, and his fellow man exemplified his Christian character and was clearly evident in his life. I am not certain who started this page but may God bless you as he has blessed us to have known this great man of God Command Sergeant Major Cornell W. Gilmore.

To: Donna L Gilmore,
I read Cornell's obituary and I was deeply moved. It touched my heart to know that he was a "minister" of music at his church.
I have been in the Ministry since 1979, and in 2004 God blessed me with a "Personalized" Tape Ministry for our Troops. I too am a "Minister" of music. I consider it an "honor" to do what I do. There are not enough hours in a day or ways to say "thank you" for all of the sacrifices!
I thank God because Cornell "...will never suffer or know pain again..." I thank God because He has "...wiped away all tears from Cornell's eyes..." I thank God because He allowed Cornell to live with and love you, Dawnita, and Cornell,II.
I will FOREVER "Salute" Command Sgt. Maj. Cornell W. Gilmore!
I am trusting God to restore "unspeakable joy" in your lives, to give you all the "peace that surpasses all understanding".
Donna, "...earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal". All of your tomorrows are in God's hands. Walk worthy of the "Call" on your life and you will see Cornell again!
You are never alone! God's Word teaches us to "bear one another burdens, thus fulfilling the law of Christ". I am here for you!
Yours in Christ,

CSM Gilmore, I never had the honor to meet you, but I have spoken and been in contact with your beautiful wife Donna since my husband, SFC Neil Prince, died in Iraq in 2005. You are very much loved and missed by all who knew and loved you. I know that you are in a better place watching over your family. Your wife has been there for me and my son and I am here for her and your family. Rest in peace and Thank you for your service not only to the country and the Army but to mankind. God Bless you brother. Thanks for sharing your husband with us Donna. God Bless you and the kids.

Today makes 4 years since Cornell's death and a lot has transpired in that time. One thing remains the same: Cornell is still loved and missed just as much if not more since his death.
My love I miss your smile, your laughter, your prayers over me in the morning. While I know that I can't hug you or hold you anymore, I can cling to the love I have for you in my heart forever. I love you and miss you, Cakes

Dear relatives of Cornell, my son SSGT Russell J. Verdugo is buried in Arlington National Cemetery along with your hero. I took some photos last Memorial Day Week-end 2007 and have a photo of your Cornell’s grave site and marker. If you would like a copy emailed to you, please let me know. I notices you had a music ministry, but now you are singing around the throne of God.
I know we are so very proud of our fallen heroes, but we miss them so.
In loving remembrance of our heroes!

Dear Donna,
I would like to tell you how much I enjoyed seeing you and SGT Gilmore together... for me you were the perfect couple. He was always helpful, corteous and motivating (especially as our choir leader in Erlangen and Fürth).
Just to let you know that I am thinking of you, your family and the time back in Erlangen.
Take care, Paula

I happened upon this webpage by chance. Cornell, you have and always will be my most favorite uncle and I pray for your wife and children everyday as they move on thru this life without you. You were such a blessing to all that have come into contact with you and you always made me feel special even though I did not grow up truly knowing my paternal side of the family. I cherish the memories of you always making sure you came to see about me whenver you were in Baltimore and you were the reason that I have decided to pledge Zeta Phi Beta graduate chapter (I was too chicken to do it when I was in college, those girls scared me...lol). I wish that your two nieces would have the chance to know you, but I will make sure that they know of you. I hope for the chance to see you once again face to face my angel of an uncle. I love you and miss you very much.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Gilmore family in the loss of Cornell. I did not know Cornell, but my heart is broken and I am saddened for your loss of such a fine young person and hero. Dear Family, I have great memories of Cornell as we were growing up. He was much younger but what sticks in my mind was that he was our first paperboy. My Mom had a warm affection for him and every Christmas she also wanted to be reminded to get him some socks. She said there was something about his smile. While I rejoice that they are now both with the Lord. Who knows he may be delivering the paper to her now. In the spirit of the Lord we can smile on these things. Donna, continue the ministry that God put into your hands. My prayers continually go out for you and the children. WITH LOVE ALWAYS, TONI :-) (Elder Sheppard)

SGM Gilmore and I were both natives of Baltimore, MD. He reminded me so much of my family that I like to think we were related somehow. When I arrived at my 1st duty station in 2000 at Ft.Lewis, I was told that Master Sergeant Gilmore wanted to meet every new soldier that would be working for him in the legal office. I was thinking "why would a Master Sergeant want to take time meeting a Private one on one and welcoming them to post?", but thats exactly what he did with me and every soldier thereafter. SGM Gilmore was so concerned with the future of the JAG Corps he wanted to be a part of our training from beginning to end. He made such an impact on so many lives, both soldier and civilian. I just pray that before he left us we made as big an impact on his.

Donna:
Though life has brought much happiness, still, there's been sadness, too. I am so grateful to have met you and Cornell, when you and your family first moved into our development. I recall our first introduction. I also remember waving to Cornell,as he manicured the yard prior to his final trip abroad.
As we celebrate Memorial Day, I give thanks to all of the service personel who fought and gave their lives for my continued freedom. Although, I do not know all who should be given the glory for my freedom, I can identify one person, and that person is your beloved, Cornell.
I wish to thank him for his unselfish love to his country. I know that his demise was premature and untimely and with such a high price to pay, but God knows best.
Today, I salute you, Cornell. May God bless you, your family, and may God bless our country.
Donna, I love you always.
Sincerely,
Barbara DeLoach

SGM Gilmore (Old Gil) was my first CPLNCO. He was inspirational to me and other soldiers and always took the extra steps to make sure that soldiers were taken care of. I hope that I can be half of the NCO that he was. I keep his picture on the cover of my Leaders Book because he epitomized what a true leader was. May God bless him, Ms. Gilmore, and the rest of their family.

My husband ALWAYS said that (rank at the time) MSG Gilmore was a great leader. I never saw him without a smile. We both remember him and his leadership fondly, and I know that it was with a heavy heart that my husband said goodbye to him as his NCOIC at the JAG on Leighton Barracks, Germany.

Dear Donna,
It has been many years since we were in contact with each other. I was stationed in Fort Polk, LA in 1983. I am so sorry for your loss. I wish that we would have stayed in contact. I have many wonderful memories. May God give you and you family the peace and strength to continue your husbands work and mission on this earth. The last remembrance I have is of you and Gil coming to the trailer where Marvin and I lived, off base. You both came to say good- bye to me. I was on my way to Japan. Marvin and I are married now and have a son in his second year of college and a daughter that is a senior in H.S. I miss you and will keep you in my prayers.

I want to thank everyone who has signed this guest book. We really miss Cornell, but the love that is constantly shown to our family sustains us through the hard times. I remember Cornell's days with the gospel group Children of the Last Days and I still have the demo album. Thanks Billy for thinking of Cornell, he told our children all about those times. God Bless you,

I had the privilege to work next door to my friend, SGM Cornell Gilmore in the Pentagon, serving on the Army Staff. I felt and still feel such a kindred spirit with Cornell. He epitomized and symbolized for me what a man of God should be and do. I spent most of my military career serving God and Country with the Army Chaplaincy so I had met and served with many men and women of God. Cornell was right up there at top on my list. He wore a smile that foretold of the joy he had by knowing the Lord. He spread that infectuous joy to others wherever he went. I don't think there was ever a doubt about Cornell's faith in God. It was indeed a rare privilege to see this brother each day as we greeted each other in passing or stuck our head in each other's door from time to time just to say hello. I can still see his smile and hear his voice as I did just this morning on my way to work. He is encouraging me still and speaking to me from on high. I am sure he is directing a choir in heaven and singing to the Joy of the Lord. I have no sadness for my brother because I know the life he lived. I know Jesus was waiting at the door of heaven and welcomed Cornell with open arms. I know one day I will see my brother again. I thank God for him and his wonderful family. Thank you God for sharing Cornell with us. SGM Rob Bush, DA Chief of Chaplain SGM.

CSM Gilmore was an outstanding leader and a wonderful mentour to all of his soldiers. I met him when I was assigned to HHC, 25th ID(L) at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, where he was the Chief Legal NCO for the JAG Corps there. I feel blessed to have known him.

I was a member of his choir and at times he was peculiar at times but he always put a smile on your face. He was a very powerful and organized person he really brought out the best in our choir and I thank God every time I think of him for allowing such a good person to have be in my life. And I'm notgoingtosay goodbye but I'm going to say that I'll see you in heaven

I know that some people say that time heals all wounds but to be honest the scar is still there. I will never forget what you have taught me about life and especially about music. I thank you for having faith in me when at times I did not have faith in myself. The very first song I directed under you was "Order MY Steps". And since then God has been doing nothing but that. I thank you and your family for allowing us to be a part of your life. You will always be my brother. A brother that I will always and forever miss.
Love ya.
