Daniel Lee Smith

Daniel Lee Smith, age 55, of Raven, Va., passed away Thurs., Oct. 30, 2008 in a Bristol, Tenn., hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Tazewell County and was the son of the late Winfred Robert and Thelma Celina Smith. He had made his home in Raven, Va., all of his life and was a former electrician, mechanic, and coal miner. He was the former owner and operator of the Marathon Service Station at Claypool Hill, Va. He was a member of the Belfast Full Gospel Church and attended Clearview First United Methodist Church in Doran, Va. He was a U.S. Army National Guard Veteran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jeffery Scott Smith; one sister, Janice Charlene Smith; one brother, Allen Eugene Smith; his father-in-law, Luther "Brownie" Cordle. Survivors are: his wife: Teresa "Jane" Smith; one daughter: Rebecca Kate Patterson and husband, Billi of North Tazewell, Va.; two sons: Daniel Lee Smith, Jr. and wife, Sarah of Pounding Mill, Va., Christian Smith of the home; two sisters: Christine Ann White and husband, Harry of Swords Creek, Va., Judy Karen Bandy and husband, Robert of Raven, Va.; two brothers: Paul Matthew Smith and wife, Carolyn, of Fairmont, W.Va., Wendell Robert Smith and wife, Anita, of Belfast, Va.; mother-in-law: Delorse Cordle of Raven, Va.; and best friend: Mack Carter of Shortts Gap, Va.; five grandchildren: Briana Patterson, Cotton Patterson, Madison Danielle Smith, Kensington Smith, and Drayton Smith and one future grandson: Jacobi Patterson also survive. Funeral services for Daniel Lee Smith were conducted Sat., Nov. 1, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Va., with the Rev. Danny Altizer and Rev. Paul Goshorn officiating. Interment followed Sun., Nov. 2, at 1:00 p.m. at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Family and friends served as pallbearers. Members of Casey Shortt VFW Post #9640 conducted military graveside rites. Friends called after 5:00 p.m. Sat., Nov. 1, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va.
