Pauline James Baker Legard

Mrs. Pauline James Baker Legard, 92, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, in the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn. She was a well-known Abingdon resident and had made her home at The Grand Court in Bristol, Va. She was born in Johnson City, Tenn., the daughter of the late William Henry Prescott Baker and Alta Mae Long Baker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Fewell Legard Sr.; one brother, William G. Baker; and two sisters, Elizabeth Baker Grant and Margaret Baker Beattie. She was a schoolteacher who taught in this area for numerous years and touched the lives of many of her students. She was a member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church. Both Pauline and her husband, Fewell have been involved with the William King Regional Art Center and it has always held a special place in their hearts. The family will continue to support the William King Regional Arts Center and the memory of both Fewell and Pauline will live on through the Center. She is survived by her son, Edwin Legard and wife, Elizabeth, of New Canaan, Conn.; one niece, Elizabeth Anne Grant Cox of Hartford, Conn.; three nephews, William G. Baker Jr. of Damascus, Ore., John E. Legard III of Chesterfield, Va., and Robert L. Legard of Abingdon; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Whitney Legard Williams and Edwin Alexander Prescott Legard; and five great-grandchildren.  Funeral services for Mrs. Pauline James Baker Legard were conducted Nov. 5 in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Walter Weikel officiating. Private internment was in the Knollkreg Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family would like to ask that contributions be made to the William King Regional Art Center, 415 Academy Drive, Abingdon, VA 24210 in memory of Pauline James Baker Legard.
