Lucy Alyce Phillips Cruey

Lucy A. Cruey, age 85 of Tazewell, Va., died Thurs., Nov. 6, 2008 at Tazewell Community Hospital. Born Feb. 12, 1923 in Pounding Mill, Va., she was a daughter of the late Henry and Annie Ruth Landers Phillips. Mrs. Cruey graduated from Tazewell High School and the National Business College in Roanoke, Va. She married Owen A. Cruey Aug. 16, 1945. She served as Treasurer for the Town of Tazewell many years and retired in 1988. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Mike O. Cruey; two brothers, Robert Earl Phillips and William F. Phillips; four sisters, Edna Edmonds, Barbara Hankins, Alberta Schwartz and Nancy Edmonds. Survivors include her husband, Owen A. Cruey; one daughter, Mary Ruth Laxton and husband, Larry of Tazewell, Va.; daughter-in-law, Rose Cruey of Bardstown, Ky.; five grandchildren, Chrystal Brady and husband, Tom, and Brandi Brant and husband, Jason, all of Chesapeake, Va., Kevin Laxton and wife, Kim, of Roanoke, Va., Sarah Hill and Paul Cruey, both of Bardstown, Ky.; seven great grandchildren, Kayla Shelton, Meagan Shelton and Avery Brant, all of Chesapeake, Va., Shelby Laxton and Ryan Laxton, both of Roanoke, Va., Morgan Hill and Jaiden Cruey, both of Bardstown, Ky.; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sat., Nov. 8, 2008 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va., with the Rev. Chris White and the Rev. Kenny Gillespie officiating. Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, Va. Relatives and friends served as pallbearers. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Fri., Nov. 7.
