Lavern "Sonny" Hoagland

Lavern "Sonny" Hoagland, age 61 of North Tazewell, Va., died Mon., Nov. 3, 2008 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Johnson City, Tenn. Born Jan. 19, 1947 at Columbus, Ohio, he was a son of the late Lavern Winfield Hoagland and Thelma Dixon Hoagland. He was a US Army Veteran of the Vietnam War and was a volunteer with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother. Survivors include his wife, Linda Hudson Hoagland; two daughters, Cynthia "Cindy" Nichols and Darrell of Peebles, Ohio, and Sherri Mollett and Anthony of Waverly, Ohio; five sons, Norman Hoagland and Christina, Lawrence "Larry" Hoagland and Vanessa, and Brian Hoagland, all of Waverly, Ohio, Michael Hudson of North Tazewell, Va., and Matthew Hudson and Becky of Omaha, Neb.; two sisters, Alice Grooms of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Bonnie Cremeans of Athens, Ohio; two brothers, Ron Elschlager and Jane of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Donald Elschlager of California; 14 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thurs., Nov. 6, 2008 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va., with the Rev. Troy Bartley officiating. Burial followed at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands, Va., where military graveside rites were conducted by members of Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell, Va. Relatives and friends served as pallbearers. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Wed., Nov. 5, 2008.
