Eunice Compton Obituary

Eunice Hubbard Compton, age 103 of Tazewell, Va., passed from this life Fri., Nov. 21, 2008 at her home. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Eunice was born July 10, 1905 in Russell County, Va., to the late James B. and Mary Florence Miller Hubbard. On her 23rd birthday she married Smith B. Compton. Eunice was a school teacher in her early years. She taught all grades in a one room school. She attended Radford Normal School, Radford, Va. She loved all church music. When she moved to Riverview Street, she joined the Riverside United Methodist Chapel. She found the need for a new piano at the church. She and her friend, Viola Asbury held bake sales to help fund the new piano. Eunice played the piano at Riverside over 40 years. At her 102nd birthday party, she played hymns for her family to sing. Those who lovingly cared for her during her declining years are Mary Matthews, Della Dunford, Patricia Nunley, Kathy Kelly, Kathy Parsons, Ronda Matney, and Kim Gillespie. In addition to her parents and husband, Smith B. Compton, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Justin, Garnett, and Dallas Hubbard; three sisters, Molly VanDyke, Myrtle Hubbard, and Rosa Tilley. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ruth Austin and husband, Edward, of Princeton, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Mary Beth Grogan and James E. Austin, both of Princeton, W.Va., and Susan Rolen of Bluefield, W.Va.; four great grandchildren, Logan Austin, Madison Austin, Kara Grogan, and Matthew Rolen. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tues., Nov. 25, 2008 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va., with the Rev. Leon Yost and the Rev. Kenneth Gillespie officiating. Burial followed at 1:00 p.m. at Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon, Va. Relatives and friends served as pallbearers. The family received friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. The family requests memorial donations be directed to Riverside United Methodist Church, 816 West Riverside Dr., North Tazewell, VA 24630.

Dear Mary Ruth,
I was so sorry to learn of Enice passing away. I received an E-Mail (12-20) from my sister-in-law in D.C.notifying me of her obituary on the internet.
She was a lovely lady , Mother always thought of her as a sister. they were very close friends.
I know how hard it is to give them up as I lost mother Oct.6,2005. she was 100.
My deepest Sympathy goes out to you and your family.

Mary Ruth, and family,

I don't know if you rem me or not, but I help take care of your mom and dad about 13 years ago. I rem sitting with her at night and she and I would watch tv together and clean and just want ever needed to be done, she will be missed so much. She was a very loveable woman and was always so kind. May God give you all comforth during your time of sorrow. May God bless each and everyone of you..

Mary Ruth, I don't know if you remember me, but, I use to take care of your mother years ago. Eunice was a very sweet, and loving lady. I know she will be sadly missed.
