Raymond Carlus Jackson, age 68 of Mavisdale, Va., died Wed., Nov. 19, 2008 at Buchanan General Hospital of an aggressive lung cancer. He was born Sept. 30, 1940 in Richlands, Va. He was the son of the late Carlus and Marie Ratliff Jackson of Oakwood, Va. He spent 40 successful years in the coal mining industry. He worked at Beatrice Island Creek #1 and #4, mining inspector and coal mining owner/operator. He was a devoted husband for 48 years, a loving father, grandfather and uncle. He was a devoted Christian who lived by his faith. He was a member of Garden Baptist Church for 37 years. Raymond's life has been a reflection and testimony for the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior. He never met a stranger and his selflessness, love and kindness he showed for family, friends and his church family will always be remembered as an example of a life for others to follow. His love for the Lord led him to witness to others right up until his last days. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Pauline Wilson Jackson; son, Raymond Barry Jackson and wife, Mickey, of High Point, N.C.; daughter, Karen Jackson Shotwell and husband, Jeff, of Brookneal, Va.; grandson, Barry Dustin Jackson of Kingsport, Tenn.; granddaughter, Morgan Paige Shotwell of Brookneal, Va.; grandson, Jeffrey Gage Shotwell of Brookneal, Va.; two sisters, Janet Fletcher and husband, Ken, of Oakwood, Va., and Barbara Blankenship and husband, Leonard, of Swords Creek, Va.; one brother, Rick Jackson and wife, Debbie, of Mavisdale, Va.; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; special friends, Betty Watson, Tammy Viers, Tommy Shortridge, Bonnie Stanley and all nurses during his care. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Sat., Nov. 22, 2008 at New Life Fellowship in Oakwood, Va., with Pastor and brother-in-law, Jerry Wilson officiating. Entombment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers were John Fields, Jim Krutzer, Jerry Raines, Guy Ray, Arthur Keen, Wayne Hagy, Clayton Hale, Bill Hale and Bob Hale. Honorary pallbearers were Clint Sutherland, M.D., Neal Readdy, M.D., Frank Dunphy, M.D., Roger McSharry, M.D., Daniel George, M.D., Chad Hightower, Nathan Prince EMTs from Johnston Transport Services. The family received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Fri., Nov. 21, at New Life Fellowship in Oakwood, Va., with a service officiated by Pastor Jody Breeding and the Garden Baptist Choir. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Raymond Jackson Memorial Fund, through Garden Baptist Church, PO Box 840, Oakwood, VA 24631. You may take donation directly to church or mail donation to church; or mail donation directly to TruPoint Bank in Oakwood, Va.
