Lucy Joyce Evans

Ms. Lucy Joyce Evans, age 97 of Cedar Bluff, Va., passed away Nov. 23, 2008 at a local nursing home following a brief illness. She was born in Jewell Ridge, Va., and was the daughter of the late Oscar and Rachel Fletcher Joyce, former Tazewell County natives. She was an avid seamstress and had retired from the dry cleaning business and from being a waitress. Lucy had spent 22 years in the Kissimmee, Fla., area before returning to the Richlands area two years ago. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Kissimmee, Fla. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Claude "Slim" Evans; one son, Oscar Houchins; two sisters, Sadie Brown and Goldie Shelton; four brothers, Doyle, Keller, Thedford and Roy Joyce. Those who remain to carry on her spirit are: her grandson, Roy Oscar Houchins and wife Rhiann of Kissimmee, Fla.; her great-grandson, Ryan Houchins of Kissimmee, Fla.; step-sister, Lydia Joyce of Cedar Bluff, Va.; sisters-in-law, Agnes Joyce of Jewell Ridge, Va., Betty Young of Jewell Ridge, Va., Dorothy Joyce of Raven, Va.; special nieces and nephew, Betty Whited of Cedar Bluff, Va., Edna Lowe of Doran, Va., James Joyce of Waverly, Va.; special friends and caregivers, Mayfair House employees and Legacy Hospice employees. Funeral services for Lucy Joyce Evans will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Fri., Dec. 5, 2008 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va., with the Rev. Jerry Casey officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.
