Lewis Garrett Obituary

Mr. Lewis Berry Garrett, 74, went to be home with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008. He was a graduate of Cleveland High School, King College, Peabody/Vanderbilt University and University of Virginia. He taught elementary school in Hampton, Va., and was an elementary principal in Culpeper County, Va., before returning to Washington County in 1992. Lewis was a faithful member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church and the Kinsmen Sunday School Class. Lewis was honored to be a 4-H All-Star and a member of the Abingdon Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley Lee Garrett and his mother, Margaret Elizabeth Berry Garrett of Abingdon. He is survived by his wife, Sallie Jones Garrett, to whom he was a faithful and loving husband of 39 years; a daughter, Susan Garrett Booher and husband, Luke Wayne Booher; three grandchildren, Kylie Elizabeth Garrett, Hunter Wayne Booher and Lyric Noelle Booher of Abingdon; his brothers Robert S. Garrett and wife, Peggy P. Garrett, of Abingdon, and Frank E. Garrett and wife, Janie M. Garrett ,of Orlando, Fla.; his aunt, Mildred L. Garrett of Bristol, Tenn.; three nieces, Pam J. Garrett,  Dr. Amy G. Ryan and Dawn L. Garrett;  and close cousins. A celebration and memorial service for Lewis was held in the Abingdon United Methodist Church with the Revs. Walter Weikel and Nicole Hill officiating. Burial was at the Cleveland Cemetery in Washington County. Active pallbearers were John Berry, Lewis Woolwine, Wayne Largen, John Lamie, Mike Ferrell and Bruce Matthews. Honorary Pallbearers were members of the Kinsmen Class of the Abingdon United Methodist Church and members of the Abingdon Lions Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Abingdon United Methodist Church Children's Program, 105 E. Main St, Abingdon, VA 24210 or HELP Literacy Program, P.O. Box 2044, Abingdon, VA 24212. Online condolences can be submitted to the family at www.frostfuneralhome.com. Frost Funeral Home of Abingdon, is serving the family of Mr. Lewis Berry Garrett.
