Melvin Junior Proffitt

Mr. Melvin Junior Proffitt, age 79, of Shortts Gap, Va., passed away Fri., Jan. 23, 2009 at his home. Born at Buchanan County, Va., he was the son of the late Henry Melvin Proffitt and Ocie Belle Davis Proffitt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester Proffitt and Brady Proffitt; one sister, Darlene Ball, and one granddaughter, Kimberly Diane Baldwin. Mr. Proffitt was a retired coal miner and he enjoyed working around the house and listening to blue grass music. Mr. Proffitt is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pauline Ratliff Proffitt; four sons, Jerry Proffitt and wife Teresa of Shortts Gap, Va., Danny Proffitt, Sr. and wife Bonnie of Red Root Ridge, Va., Timothy Proffitt and wife Cookie of Jacksonville, Fla., and Michael Proffitt and wife Kim of Red Ash, Va.; three daughters, Sue Lane and husband Jim of Cedar Bluff, Va., Teresa Baldwin and husband David of Raven, Va., and Jan Howell and husband Bobby of Red Ash, Va.; four sisters, Georgia Brown of Keen Mountain, Va., Beatrice Gilbert and husband Henry of Claypool Hill, Va., Jean Dye of Doran, Va., and Ruth James and husband Emory of Council, Va.; two brothers, Charlie Proffitt of Red Ash, Va. and Hubert Proffitt of Whitewood, Va.; nine grandchildren, Bobby Cruey, David Cruey, Billy Ball, Danny Proffitt, Jr., Matthew Proffitt, Matessa Keene, Curtis Short, Allena Proffitt and Tressa Proffitt; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and his loving dog Dale also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Melvin Junior Proffitt were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Mon., Jan. 26, 2009 in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, Va., with Rev. Jack Ward and Rev. James Salyers officiating. Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers were Bobby Johnson, Otis Johnson, Jessie Dye, Paul Smith, Wayne Ward, Charlie Ward and Bobby Howell. Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren.
