Charles Richard "Dickie" Vaught, 66, of Rural Retreat died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. Funeral service was held Monday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tim Worgan officiating. A graveside service was held Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m. at the Mountain View Cemetery with Masonic Rites conducted by Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge 226. He was born July 31, 1942, in Wythe County, son of the late Charles Walker "Jenkie" and Rosa Heldreth Vaught. He was a member of the Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge 226 A.F. & A.M. of Rural Retreat and was preceded in death by a son, Derick Shayne Vaught. Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Brian Walker "Cheeseburger" Vaught of Rural Retreat and Richie Vaught and his wife, Chelle, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a daughter, Denisa Lynn Vaught of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three grandchildren, Brianna Butler, Marissa Butler and Blaine Walker Vaught; two sisters, Doris Buchanan of Winston-Salem and Linda Porter and her husband Jerry of Cripple Creek; one brother, Ronnie Vaught and his wife, Vickie, of Blythewood, S.C.; and special friends, June Smith of Rural Retreat and Niki Jones of Wytheville. The family suggests that those who prefer may make a memorial donation to the Wythe County Sheriff's Office D.A.R.E. Program, 245 South 4th Street, Wytheville, VA 24382. Lindsey Funeral Home of Rural Retreat was in charge of arrangements.

Cheese, Your dad was one of my favorite people in the area. He delivered fuel to us for years, and was the same gentleman every day. He gave me some of the best advice of my life when I was going thru a tough time. Keep your chin up, Dickie is smiling on ya!
