Ralph R. Courtney

Ralph R. Courtney, 100, of Wytheville died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009. Funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Mack Taylor officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. He was the owner and operator of R.R. Courtney Coal Yard. He was the oldest member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Columbus Whorton and Margaret Jackson Aker Courtney; his wife, Opal Tarter Courtney; four sisters; and six brothers. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Rachel Courtney of Wytheville, Dallas and Laura Courtney of Lenoir, N.C.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Fonda Courtney Albert and Gene of Wytheville, Donnie Courtney and Becky of Crockett, Randy Courtney of Lenoir, N.C., and Todd Courtney of Hudson, N.C.; six great-grandchildren and their spouses, Paul Weaver and Leslie of Wytheville, Carrie Courtney and Travis Courtney, both of Crockett, Isaiah Courtney, Keelan Courtney and Connor Courtney, all of Hudson, N.C.; and one great-great-grandchild, Jeremiah Weaver. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church or the church cemetery fund. Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.
