Monty G. Harmon Sr.

Monty Gene Harmon Sr., 69, of Wytheville died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at his residence. Funeral service will be held Sunday, March 1, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Gary Cope and Don Scott officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery with Grover King Post 1115 VFW conducting graveside military rites. He was born Sept. 10, 1939, in Wythe County, son of the late George Burton and Belva Mae Arnold Harmon. He was retired from the city of Bluefield, W.Va. He was affiliated with Word of Life Ministries and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by a son, M.G. Harmon Jr.; and two sisters, Nancy Arnold and Venetta Lewis. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Fredia Goforth Harmon of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Belva and Jimmy Scott of Max Meadows; three grandchildren, Brittany Harmon of Bland, Chris Scott, Sarah and Wayne Kirby; three sisters and brother-in-law, Beulah McPeak and Geneva Roberts, both of Wytheville, Juanita and James Coleman of Max Meadows; two brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Ruby Harmon, William A. and Carleen Harmon, all of Wytheville; and several nieces, nephews and close friends. The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc., P.O.
