Katherine "Siddy" Porter Mabe, 84, of Max Meadows died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009. Funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Max Meadows United Methodist Church. Interment will be in West End Cemetery. She was a member of the Max Meadows United Methodist Church. She was a retired postal worker and former owner/operator of Fort Chiswell Grocery. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh Stafford and Virginia Watts Porter; and her husband, Robert Lewis Mabe. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Lena Mabe Davis of Max Meadows, Claudia Mabe and Roy Gallimore of Pulaski, Carol Mabe and Mike Reynolds of Max Meadows; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Lewis Jr. and Pat Mabe of Tampa, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Hugh "Son" Franklin and Jettie Porter of Max Meadows; special friends, Donna Moore of Max Meadows and Dulinda Bender of Floyd; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Although it's been nearly three-quarters of a century since I last saw her, I remember "Siddy" quite well and was distressed to read of her passing. I also knew Lewis and Brown and "Son" and "Hop," as well, as Mr. and Mrs. Porter. They were all fine people. I suppose "Son" is the only one left who might remember me, but I hope that all of you will accept my deepest sympathy.
