Mary E. Smith

Mary E. Smith, 83, died June 4, 2009 at Valley Health Center. She was born in Broadford to the late Crockett Brewster and Hallie Asbury Brewster and was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Smith, her daughter, Nancy Bane, four brothers, Graham, Luther, Jack and Billy Brewster and a sister, Susie Elswick. She was also preceded in death by a half sister, Katherine Fields and a half brother, George Brewster. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Mellard and husband, William L. Mellard of Charleston, N.C.; sisters, Annie Asbury and husband, Henry, of Germantown, Md., and Carolyn Harris of Marion; five grandchildren, Larry Bane and wife, Patty, Anna Marie Roten and husband, Mark, Ginger Mellard, Mac Bane and wife, Jody, and Billy Mellard; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Edith Brewster of Wytheville; Lillian Smith of Tazewell; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 7 at the Bradley's Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Roy Lee Smith officiating. Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield. The family received friends Sunday from 12 until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
