Thomas Beavers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 15 to Jul. 22, 2009.
Thomas Lane "Smoke" Beavers, age 84, of Tucker, Ga., passed away at Hospice Atlanta on July 8, 2009, joining his precious wife Brownie on their wedding anniversary. Tom was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He reached out to the people he met with wit and charm and often left them with a two dollar bill and a smile on their faces. Tom and Brownie were dancers extraordinaire and loved to "trip the light fantastic" at every opportunity. Tom was born in Richlands, Va., on Nov. 12, 1924, to Thomas A. and Nanola M. Beavers, who like his brother Pete predeceased him. He is survived by his daughters Cindy Bickman (Mike) and Stephanie Holby (Bill), and grandchildren, Alison, Lane, Elisabeth, and Neil Holby, all of the Atlanta area. After serving the country he loved as an Army Air Corps pilot, Tom graduated from Virginia Tech and became a lifelong Hokie fan. He rose through the building construction industry to serve as President of McDonough Construction Company in Atlanta and later to form his own company and leave a mark on the commercial landscape locally and internationally. His love of children lead him and Brownie to invest much of their lives in Camp Chattooga for Girls in Tallulah Falls, Ga., and in Chattooga Gymnastics in Marietta, Ga., while loving and nurturing their four precious grandchildren as they grew up with "Nana and Papa". The family held a celebration of his life on Sun., July 12, at 4 p.m. at Tucker First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: The Chattooga Foundation for care of special needs children (700 Trinity Church Road, Canton, GA 30115), or the Young Life Camp Scholarship Fund (P.O. Box 724731, Atlanta, GA 31139). Special thanks go to the staff of Atria Buckhead and Cara Vita Homecare for the loving care they provided over the last year. Arrangements by Bill Head Funeral Homes and Crematory, Lilburn/Tucker Chapel. (770) 564-2726.

Cindy and Stephanie –

This has to be such a difficult time for you at the loss of your Dad and yet it also gives you the opportunity to really think back over the years and remember the very special times you had together with him and your Mom.

Tom and Brownie have had a special place in the hearts of my family from when we moved to the Tucker Methodist Church in 1964. They were close friends to my Dad and Mother (Neal and Frances), and my sister (Liz) had wonderful times at that fabulous mountain camp. Every time we talked about our lives in Tucker, we always thought of Tom and Brownie. We were always met with huge hugs every time we would see them over the years. Brownie’s nursing expertise was a definite resource we called on as we nursed our parents through their ensuing battles with Parkinson’s and ovarian cancer.

You had the blessing to have wonderful parents who the world loved and always welcomed into any gathering. How fabulous that they are now together again.

Love to your family.

I was a camper at Camp Chattooga for many years and loved spending my summers with Brownie and Smoke. They were great leaders and always had smiles on their faces. Please know your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

I worked with Tom for 11 years (1961 to 1972)a McDonough Construction Co. Tom was my boss and a good one. He taught me a lot about business and construction. We had a lot of fun bidding and building prujects. I had a lot of respect for Tom. He was a very good Man.

We miss Tom walking down Midvale Road, sharing his stories and big smile with everyone he encountered. He and Brownie were an inspiration and the best of neighbors. We share your loss along with all of the Landeau Circle old timers.

Dear Stephanie, Cindy, Bill, Alison, Lane, Elisabeth and Neil,
I am so very sorry for your loss. Your father, father-in-law, grandfather, certainly lived a very giving, sacrificial and fun-filled life. How comforted you all must be that he is now with his beloved Brownie and the Lord he served. "When we all get to Heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be..."
Until that Day, you all are in my prayers.

I was very sorry to see that "Smoke" has passed away. As a long-time Athens Y Camper, I had the pleasure of seeing he and Brownie every summer up at the AYC-Chattooga square dances. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. He will no doubt be reunited in heaven with Brownie, Pop Pearson, Coach Mike Castronis and others that had the pleasure of their company.
